To his voters, he says, the bridge is the road to the rest of the world, and that road starts in Perth Amboy.<\/p>\n“You almost feel like if you go an inch or two the wrong way in either direction, that you’re going to be guilty of an accident,” Morano said.<\/p>\n
Perth Amboy Mayor Helmin Caba said the 98-year-old bridge was not designed to handle the volume of traffic it sees today, with about 14 million crossings a year, according to the Port Authority.<\/p>\n
News 12 has reported on long, frequent backups in Perth Amboy near the bridge.<\/p>\n
Last year the Port Authority approved more than $300 million for bridge repairs. The Coast Guard says that work will run through 2028.<\/p>\n
“When you’re dealing with all these agencies, almost nothing is on-time, on-budget, so we need to accelerate the planning phase,” Morano said. As agencies propose a quicker turnaround, the Port Authority said it is reviewing the letter and working closely with both states.<\/p>\n
Morano pointed to other bridges nearby that received funding for new spans. “We’ve had the Bayonne Bridge get a replacement; we’ve had the Goethals Bridge get a replacement,” he said. “Here on the South Shore of Staten Island, this is the only bridge we’ve had.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Staten Island politicians want New York Gov.
