BAYSIDE, Queens (WABC) — It’s something neighbors in Bayside, Queens say they’ve been waiting for, for more than two years.<\/p>\n
“I’m delighted,” said neighbor Harry Yanakis. “We’re all happy, the neighbors are all here and finally we have closure.”<\/p>\n
The sheriff’s department showed up to take possession of a home on 205th Street. A moving company packed up all of the belongings inside and removed them from the property. They also changed the locks on all of the doors.<\/p>\n
The original homeowner, Richard Klibschon, died without having any immediate family.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said Vernon Glass and his partner, Lusascha Taylor, took advantage of the empty home and moved in — without having a legal right to be there.<\/p>\n
7 On Your Side Investigates first reported on the situation<\/a> in September.<\/p>\n Three weeks later, the Queen’s DA arrested Glass and Taylor<\/a> and they were arraigned on felony charges. They both pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n While the district attorney was working on the criminal case, the Queens Public Administrator took legal action to take over Klibschon’s estate which led to them getting possession of the property.<\/p>\n “We had to have possession of the property so that we could begin the process of marketing it and make it a productive asset for the estate if we can,” said Gerard Sweeney, an attorney for the Public Administrator.<\/p>\n They said the home will be cleaned and sold.<\/p>\n “The faster you can close these estates off, the better it is for everybody,” said Sweeney.<\/p>\n They’re not only removing all of the alleged squatters’ belongings, they’re also installing a security system to ensure no one enters the home moving forward.<\/p>\n “We actually have cameras inside that will be triggered if someone breaks through, it’s not unusual that we’ll have people break back in,” said Sweeney.<\/p>\n A judge ordered Glass not to return to the Bayside property.<\/p>\n While the movers were working, Glass showed up at the end of the street. He told police he wasn’t served with the two-weeks notice that his belongings were being removed.<\/p>\n The Public Administrator said he was.
