(AP) \u2014 Computer chip company GlobalFoundries Inc. said Wednesday it plans to open two factories in Malta, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/new-york\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a>, financed by an investment of up to $21 billion from Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The company said the deal was made possible by the Trump administration&#8217;s trade and investment agreement with the Japanese government. It said the initiative will accelerate semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. and strengthen critical supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>The company previously received some federal funding to expand as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/computer-chips-biden-new-york-schumer-globalfoundries-fe69bb214354695769dd615de4f9c221\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Biden administration<\/a> program to expand chip production. As a result of the investment from Japan, that federal funding will now go to investments in other areas to advance semiconductor manufacturing, GlobalFoundries spokesperson Kenneth Craig said in an email.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a> posted on social media that the U.S. government will receive shares in GlobalFoundries, just as it did for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/intel-corp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intel Corp<\/a>., in an expansion of the administration\u2019s policy of taking ownership stakes in private companies.<\/p>\n<p>GlobalFoundries said in a statement that roughly $10 billion would accelerate construction of a chip factory to open in 2029 and the other $10 billion would fund a second plant.<\/p>\n<p>Demand for semiconductors has surged in recent years thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> and the need for computing power at data centers.
