Judging by the enthusiastic reception, the kingdom of Orïsha may have found its people.

There is nothing quite like New York City during Comic Con. For four glorious days, superheroes ride the subway; elaborately costumed warriors emerge from ferries; and witches, villains, and intergalactic travelers make their way through Manhattan on foot.

It is cosplay on an epic scale. For Paramount Pictures, which brought its ambitious adaptation of Nigerian American author Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel “Children of Blood and Bone” to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, there could hardly have been a better audience.

Thuso Mbedu onstage during New York Comic Con 2026 for “Children of Blood and Bone” at Javits Convention Center on October 10, 2026, in New York, N.Y. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the convention attracts an audience that is anything but casual. These fans know their source material; notice every alteration to a beloved character; and can spend months debating costumes, casting decisions, and the smallest details in a trailer. Their opinions carry considerable weight, often traveling far beyond the convention floor through social media, fan communities, and the kind of word-of-mouth enthusiasm that no advertising campaign can manufacture.

For Paramount, that’s the prize: capturing lightning in the proverbial bottle, turning the passion of devoted fans into the kind of excitement that carries a film from its first public presentation all the way to opening weekend.

Filmmaker Rian Johnson, whose credits include “Knives Out” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” moderated a lively discussion with director and co-screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood and cast members Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Lashana Lynch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Cynthia Erivo.

Damson Idris speaks during New York Comic Con 2026 for “Children of Blood and Bone” at Javits Convention Center on October 10, 2026, in New York, N.Y. (Photo by Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images for Paramount Pictures)

Set in the fictional kingdom of Orïsha, inspired by West African mythology, “Children of Blood and Bone” follows Zélie Adebola (Mbedu), a young woman determined to restore the magic violently stolen from her people. Joined by her brother Tzain (Cole), she forms an unlikely alliance with Princess Amari (Stenberg) and Prince Inan (Idris), the children of King Saran (Ejiofor), whose brutal rule has left the kingdom divided. Together, they challenge the monarchy responsible for suppressing magic.

The presentation offered exclusive footage and a closer look at the film’s costumes, action sequences, and complicated family loyalties. Reports from the event described an enthusiastic audience, with some fans arriving in African-inspired clothing, hairstyles, and makeup.

Prince-Bythewood, whose directing credits include “Love & Basketball,” “The Woman King,” and “The Old Guard,” has considerable experience in portraying women who challenge the limits imposed on them. With this film, she brings that sensibility to a production of considerably greater scale.

Filmed in South Africa and the Canary Islands, the production incorporates physical locations and elaborate sets with visual effects. Working with production designer Hannah Beachler and costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones, Prince-Bythewood has drawn upon African cultures and traditions to establish the kingdom’s visual identity.

Erivo, who captivated audiences as Elphaba in “Wicked,” portrays Admiral Kaea, a powerful figure in the kingdom’s ruling forces. The wider cast includes Viola Davis, Regina King, Idris Elba, Zackary Momoh, and Richard Mofe-Damijo, an international ensemble assembled for a story that places African-inspired mythology at the center of a major studio production.

Cynthia Erivo speaks during New York Comic Con 2026 for “Children of Blood and Bone” at Javits Convention Center on October 10, 2026, in New York, N.Y.

The excitement about the film has not been without complications. This summer, Adeyemi publicly distanced herself from the adaptation she helped write, describing a traumatic experience with the production. In September, she told the Amsterdam News that she had no intention of watching the completed film and would never again permit one of her books to be adapted for the screen.

Questions about colorism, including discussion about the casting of Stenberg as Princess Amari, have also entered the public conversation. The full circumstances of Adeyemi’s dispute remain unclear, and her concerns deserve serious consideration, but watching this family squabble unfold so publicly hurts the heart.

For people of color, and the genuine allies who have spent decades fighting for greater representation in Hollywood, the desire to support a project like “Children of Blood and Bone” runs deep. We want the author to succeed; the director to succeed; and the actors, designers, and hundreds of creative professionals whose work makes a film possible to succeed.

To see these ambitions overshadowed by public disagreement recalls an old and painfully effective tactic: divide and conquer. Sometimes the divisions in our own communities accomplish what outside forces have long attempted — predictable, tragic, and especially disheartening when there is so much to celebrate.

Adeyemi has every right to speak about her experience. Prince-Bythewood and her cast also deserve the opportunity to have their work considered on its merits. Supporting a Black woman author and supporting an African American woman director should never have to become mutually exclusive positions.

The New York Comic Con presentation returned attention to the film’s creative ambitions, and just how talented Prince-Bythewood is as a director. There is also the matter of what this production represents. Hollywood has spent generations financing elaborate fantasy kingdoms, most of them drawing upon European mythology. Now a Nigerian American author’s creation, directed by an African American woman and featuring a distinguished international cast, is receiving the kind of large-scale theatrical treatment that has long been reserved for other stories.

Whether audiences embrace Orïsha beyond its established readership remains to be seen, but the film’s arrival at Comic Con gave its creators a chance to put their work before people who understand the pleasures, and the demands, of an imagined world.

“Children of Blood and Bone” opens exclusively in theaters January 15, 2027, including Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and premium large formats.

Follow the film on Facebook | Instagram | TikTok | Threads.

#ChildrenOfBloodAndBone #NYCC2026 #GinaPrinceBythewood

Related

Look who stepped into New York City this weekend: The warriors of “Children of Blood and Bone” arrived…

[36
98,100,99,9,24,63
post-373640","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brooklyn","tag-brooklyn","tag-brooklyn-headlines","tag-brooklyn-news","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc
["GET
