<\/p>\nNew York City Mayor Mamdani and the Parks Commissioner announced on Friday,\u00a0October,\u00a09,\u00a02026, the Lost Battalion Center in Rego Park\u00a0has been\u00a0reopened. A ribbon cutting ceremony made it official for the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n
We asked center manager Angela Eli to tell us a little about the reopening.\u00a0\u201cWell,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0four\u00a0years in the making. We closed for renovations in June of 2022.\u00a0So\u00a0the community and\u00a0myself\u00a0have been waiting for this center to reopen, and\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0gotten a lot of foot traffic. We did a lot of tours of the building today. We did\u00a0some\u00a0memberships. People are happy to have us back. And\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0great to see some of my older members that were here when we\u00a0started\u00a0the renovation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0We said that we understood that some of the renovations might have been to accommodate those who are disabled, handicapped,\u00a0or elderly and asked her to talk about the renovation.\u00a0\u201cA big part of the renovation was to have egress in case of an emergency.\u00a0The building does have an elevator, but now we have an entrance\/exit, but if you\u2019re on the lower level, you can\u2019t actually get out of the building in case of an emergency.\u00a0So\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0going to be\u00a0better\u00a0and we\u00a0are able to\u00a0accommodate any type of emergency.\u201d\u00a0The Lost Battalion Center is a membership organization, run by the Parks Department, and receives\u00a0additional\u00a0funding from the\u00a0City Council.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve been here since September 2011.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
She told us that membership fees are based on age.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0going to\u00a0start with\u00a0seniors,\u00a0seniors are $25 for the year. Anyone from birth to age 25,\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0free. And that membership\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0always in place, but the agency introduced that a couple of years ago. Anyone from 25 to 61 before they were seniors\u00a0is $50 for 6 months or $100 for the year.\u00a0Heads\u00a0up. And anyone with a disability or our veterans, $25\u00a0for\u00a0a year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
We asked her what activities the center\u00a0provides?\u00a0<\/p>\n
She replied,\u00a0\u201cIn our gymnasium, we have table tennis, pickleball, basketball, badminton, soccer\u00a0seasonally. We have an\u00a0after school\u00a0program where we do floor hockey and there, we do flat\u00a0football in\u00a0there. Oh,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a whole host of things. And there is no pool.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
She said that her members can go to the aquatic center\u00a0in Flushing Meadows Corona Park to swim.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe community\u2019s been waiting a long time for us to reopen, and, you know, I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0even go outside to walk to my car without someone stopping me.\u00a0\u2018When are you opening?\u00a0When are you opening?\u2019\u00a0So\u00a0it was a pleasure starting last week to tell them we have a date to reopen.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
