Lisa Fencik is a nutritionist with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But she is a lot more than that.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A native of Pittsburgh, Fencik moved to New York to study public health and nutrition, and she\u2019s been there ever since.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As a nutritionist, she helps children and adults tackle food challenges \u2013 from preparing healthy recipes to improving food access for needy families to dealing with a picky eater. She also helps individuals establish healthy weight goals and cope with chronic disease such as diabetes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a role she\u2019s passionate about.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom a young age, I\u2019ve always been interested in how to stay healthy,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But Fencik\u2019s job is only one aspect of her calling. In her spare time, she also works as a doula, providing informational, emotional and physical support to new moms, and she volunteers with Bike New York<\/a>, empowering children and adults to improve their lives through bicycling.\u00a0<\/p>\n Colleagues and fellow union members have noticed Fencik\u2019s involvement in her community and her passion for helping others.\u00a0<\/p>\n Anthony Scruggs, a colleague who serves as public health advisor, says Fencik \u2013 with her compassion, empathy and dedication \u2013 captures \u201cthe spirit of AFSCME.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cTo say that Lisa\u2019s guidance as a dietitian and doula increases much-needed help and support to the vulnerable and underserved populations would be an understatement,\u201d says Scruggs, adding that Fencik goes above and beyond without boasting about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s humble but strong,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n
