ESSEX COUNTY, N.Y. (WRGB/CBS Newspath/WKRC) — A Canadian man convicted of murdering his 9-year-old daughter in New York last year has been sentenced, reports WRGB.

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Luciano Frattolin to 25 years to life in prison for second-degree murder and another one to three years for concealment of a corpse in the death of Melina Galanis Frattolin in July 2025. He was also given a $5,000 fine for the murder charge, and the court issued a protection order for his ex-partner and Melina’s mother, Kali Galanis.

According to previous reporting by WRGB, Frattolin and Melina, who lived in Montreal at the time, entered the United States on July 11, 2025, for vacation. They were supposed to return to Canada on July 19, and Melina was to be returned to her mother’s custody. Despite Galanis being estranged from Frattolin for several years, she told police she had no reason to believe her daughter was in danger with her father.

On July 19, Frattolin called 911 and reported his daughter missing from a possible abduction. An AMBER Alert was issued, and investigators found the 9-year-old’s body in a shallow pond in a wooded area in Ticonderoga on July 20. New York State Police said they noticed inconsistencies in Frattolin’s account of events and the timeline he provided, and he was arrested shortly after.

According to court documents, it’s believed Frattolin murdered his daughter in a wooded area in Ticonderoga sometime between 7:40 p.m. and 9:12 p.m. on July 19. Preliminary autopsy results determined Melina had died from asphyxia due to drowning.

Before his sentencing, Frattolin reportedly did not address the court. Essex County District Attorney Michael Langey said he never accepted responsibility for what happened to Melina, instead choosing to blame his ex-partner.

Members of Melina’s family submitted written victim impact statements that weren’t read aloud in court, but Langey shared them outside the courtroom.

“We continue to suffer deeply since the day Melina was brutally murdered. Nothing can bring Melina back, but we are relieved that this chapter is over. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who worked on the case for your dedication and persistence. Your efforts helped bring a measure of justice for our family,” the statement said.

Frattolin will be eligible for parole after serving 25 years.

ESSEX COUNTY, N.Y.
