NEW YORK, Oct 15 (Reuters) – A \u2060federal \u2060judge on Thursday \u2060threw out a Trump administration lawsuit that \u200bsought to block New York City laws limiting \u200ccooperation with federal immigration enforcement, \u200cfinding the government did not have \u2060a valid \u2060basis to sue.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2022 US District Judge Ramon Reyes \u200bin Brooklyn said President Donald Trump\u2019s administration could not challenge a city law barring police from detaining immigrants \u200bat the request of federal authorities because that \u2060practice is \u2060already prohibited by \u2060state \u200blaw.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The judge also said city laws restricting local \u200bauthorities from sharing \u2060release dates, whereabouts or other custody information about immigrants were valid because federal law does not require state and local governments to share \u2060that information.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Reyes rejected the administration\u2019s arguments that federal law \u2060superseded the challenged New York City laws, finding the federal government could not force local governments to assist with immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The administration filed the lawsuit in New York federal court in July 2025\u00a0as part of its campaign against so-called sanctuary city policies, which \u2060aim to shield immigrants from Trump\u2019s mass deportation campaign.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the \u200bruling.<\/p>\n
