Attorneys representing a 28-year-old man who was shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the Bronx last week are calling for his immediate release from the Metropolitan Detention Center.<\/p>\n
Oscar Belgal was shot in the neck on Oct. 8 in the Marble Hill section of the Bronx. His 5-year-old son was in the backseat. <\/p>\n
Activists gathered Thursday near West 225th Street and Broadway one week after the shooting to show support for Belgal and call for ICE to leave the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are New Yorkers and to get to any of us, they’re going to have to go through all of us,\u201d one person at the rally said. \u201cThis is for Oscar, for every other New Yorker that’s been abducted from their homes, their families here in New York in the last two years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Belgal\u2019s attorneys say he remains at the Metropolitan Detention Center while awaiting surgery. They say he is experiencing a loss of sensation on the left side of his face and impaired hearing in his left ear.<\/p>\n
Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz also criticized the agents’ actions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don’t want people in my community or in the Bronx or anywhere being endangered by reckless actions of under-trained ICE agents,\u201d Dinowitz said.<\/p>\n
