NEW YORK \u2014 A federal judge on Thursday threw \u200bout a Trump administration lawsuit that sought to block New York City laws limiting cooperation \u200cwith federal immigration enforcement, finding the government did not have \u2060a valid basis to \u200bsue.<\/p>\n
\u2022 U.S. District Judge \u2060Ramon Reyes in Brooklyn said President Donald Trump’s \u200cadministration could not \u200cchallenge a city law barring police from \u2060detaining immigrants at the \u2060request of federal authorities because that practice is already prohibited by state law.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The judge also said city laws restricting local authorities from sharing release dates, whereabouts or other custody information \u200cabout immigrants were valid because \u200bfederal law does not require state and local governments to share that information.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Reyes rejected the administration’s arguments that federal law superseded the challenged New York City laws, finding the federal government could not force local governments to assist \u200bwith immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The administration filed the lawsuit \u200cin New York \u200cfederal \u2060court in July 2025 as part of its campaign against so-called sanctuary city policies, which aim to shield immigrants from Trump’s mass deportation campaign.<\/p>\n
