The family was getting ready to leave when the boy was hit by the family SUV, according to Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis all happened, family was getting ready to leave the home early this morning to do their normal routine and this all happened near the garage, the driveway area of the home,\u201d Chief Brice said. <\/p>\n
Police said neighbors rushed over to help before emergency responders arrived. <\/p>\n
\u201cThank you to the community members that jumped into action. For my brave officers that got here and did what they could do. The fire department, EMS personnel, hospital personnel that were all involved in this, trying to give this young man the care that\u2019s necessary,\u201d the chief said. <\/p>\n
The child was initially taken to a nearby hospital, but then flown to a different hospital in critical condition. <\/p>\n

Police did not say who was driving. They said impairment has been ruled out and stressed that there is nothing criminal, calling it a \u201ctragic accident.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cThe biggest thing we want to say is this is an absolutely tragic situation. An accident that occurred where it\u2019s going to have a lot of impact on the family, obviously, and the community,\u201d the chief said. <\/p>\n
\u201cAgain, I want to reiterate this is a tragic event that we\u2019re just going to help the family work through,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n
Chief Brice said the department is working with the officers and neighbors involved to ensure everyone receives necessary resources. <\/p>\n
\u201cOur hearts are with the family. I can\u2019t tell you what this does to everyone involved. My officers, this is something that just compounds on their daily difficult things that they encounter,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
The chief says officers will do a full 3D rendering of the scene and take the vehicle for analysis. <\/p>\n
Drivers should avoid the area as the investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
