Within the city limits, hundreds of Thai restaurants call the five boroughs home, and while Pad Thai and chicken satay are tasty mainstays, knowledgeable diners are aware there’s more to Thai cuisine than the takeout favorites. From Michelin Bib Gourmand awardees to fine dining, New York City has all levels of Thai food. Having dined at many such eateries in the city, I’ve listed a few standouts showcasing the regional diversity of Thai cuisine in New York.

Chada

 Chada

Located in the West Village, Chada is a festive restaurant inspired by dynamic street food and Bangkok’s Grand Palace. Praonnut “Pim” Udompanit, the owner, took this colorful palate and incorporated it into the menu, creating a lively atmosphere that’s great for a weekday dinner or date night. Some notable dishes include a refreshing crab salad and a whole steamed branzino served with a classic Thai seafood sauce of garlicky lime. A standout dish is the short rib panang curry. Sweet, but not cloying, the short rib is served with the bone and Brussels sprouts that work surprisingly well with the nutty panang sauce. Rice will be mandatory.

But be sure to also sample the inventive cocktail menu. Led by Bar Manager Pattakan “Limon” Rumsanthia, the drink program is inspired by the historic Thai epic poem, Ramakien. “Each cocktail takes inspiration from a particular character, group, or image and expresses its personality through flavor, aroma, texture, color, and technique,” explains Rumsanthia. “The cocktail program connects with the physical space of Chada. The restaurant has Thai-inspired artwork on the walls, including imagery of apsaras. Cocktails become another way for us to tell a Thai story.” I recommend the Golden Rama, a clean and bright drink made with tequila, white rum, Rockey, makrut lime syrup, green apple, and Midori.

hed NYC

 Liz Clayman

While hed NYC does have an à la carte selection, the best way to experience the restaurant is the five-course tasting menu. Priced at a reasonable $126 per person (for 2026 standards, that is), there’s an optional $95 wine pairing. While the tasting menu is five courses on paper, there’s actually more selection. The fourth course allows diners a selection between two pairs of dishes: Braised Caramelized Pork Belly or Red Curry Fried Chicken, or Braised Hanger Steak or Southern Thai Crab Curry. As expected of most New York menus these days, there are add-on options here, including wagyu ribeye in jungle curry for $64.

There can be a fussy, perhaps stoic eating experience to fine-dining tasting menus that can detract for some diners. I personally found that aspect absent from my experience at hed NYC. Presentation here is fine-dining, but the spices and actual eating of the food were not. The fourth course, especially if you dine with others, is designed to be shared in true Thai fashion. My recommendation would be for two people to choose different options for the fourth course and the dessert, allowing everyone to sample the entirety of the hed NYC tasting menu.

Zaab Zaab

 Zaab Zaab

Known as Little Thailand, Elmhurst, Queens, is the home of authentic Thai cuisine in New York. Here, restaurant menus are designed for the Thai diaspora — no culinary shortcuts or flavors held back for a non-Thai audience. Zaab Zaab, a northeastern Isan restaurant, is an example of this. There are three locations in New York, with the original Queens location being awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The Williamsburg, Brooklyn location shares the menu but with a larger dining space.

The food at Zaab Zaab is classic northeastern Thai — think acidic flavors heavy on the herbs, spices, and meat. Coconut milk, an often-used ingredient in other regions of Thai cuisine, is not foundational in Isan cooking. I recommend trying the specialty items on the menu, especially the duck larb. A meat-forward salad of duck meat, liver, and crispy skin, it’s best eaten wrapped with lettuce and herbs. The moo tod pla ra, fried pork belly marinated in fermented fish sauce, will disappear quickly when consumed with Thai beer. It’s the perfect drinking food. And while the menu is filled with Isan favorites, there is room for other regions of Thailand. One of the most intriguing noodle dishes is the 3 Musketeers, a combination of glass noodles, shrimp, pork, garlic, and pungent stink beans; the flavors of this dish are more Southern Thai than Isan. I recommend rounding every meal with a som tum, papaya salad, for a refreshing accompaniment.

Thai restaurants are some of the most popular in America, and New York City is no exception.
