Ritchie Torres’ office received an envelope containing a white powder Friday afternoon, prompting a hazmat response. Officials determined the substance was not hazardous.

Torres said the incident was a reminder of the threats facing elected officials.

“To me, it was a grim reminder that, you know, violence and the threat of violence against our elected officials is a new normal,” Torres said.

On Long Island, Rep. Laura Gillen also received a suspicious letter.

“My staff and I are safe, and law enforcement was notified and intervened right away. Thank you to our law enforcement for their rapid response and commitment to our safety everyday,” she wrote in a statement. ““There is no excuse for acts of violence or intimidation against elected officials in our country.”

The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating the mailings and working to identify whoever is responsible.

Packages were also sent to the New Jersey offices of Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Robert Menendez Jr. and Frank Pallone. Pallone’s office said the substance in its package was tested and determined not to be hazardous.

No injuries were reported in the New Jersey incidents.

Other offices targeted include those of New York Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, as well as Connecticut Sens.
