{"id":375925,"date":"2026-10-17T23:58:55","date_gmt":"2026-10-17T23:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/375925\/"},"modified":"2026-10-17T23:58:55","modified_gmt":"2026-10-17T23:58:55","slug":"eucharistic-procession-draws-thousands-to-manhattan-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/375925\/","title":{"rendered":"Eucharistic Procession Draws Thousands to Manhattan Streets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MIDTOWN \u2014 Jes\u00fas Muro had just finished his day working at a bank in Rockefeller Center when he stepped outside and encountered something unexpected: His Lord and Savior moving through the streets of Manhattan.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Muro hadn\u2019t planned to participate in the Napa Institute\u2019s fifth annual Eucharistic Procession on Oct. 13, but when he saw Catholics walking through Midtown with the Blessed Sacrament, he decided to join them.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very happy to be Catholic,\u201d Muro said. \u201cI joined this because it\u2019s really important; it\u2019s part of my faith. I\u2019m very proud of these people to show their faith [on the street] like this.\u201d\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetablet.org\/eucharistic-procession-stops-traffic-in-midtown-manhattan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">RELATED: Faith in the Streets \u2014 Eucharistic Procession Stops Traffic in Midtown Manhattan<\/a><\/p>\n<p>, which followed a Mass at St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Espaillat of New York, who was the first of many to carry the Eucharist through Manhattan before returning for Benediction. Millions of viewers also participated remotely via social media.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Mass was also offered for Pope Leo XIV, who was undergoing surgery in Rome to remove a localized nodule in his lung, which was later <a href=\"https:\/\/thetablet.org\/us-bishops-lawmakers-offer-prayers-for-pope-leo-after-cancer-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">diagnosed as cancer<\/a>.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be united with him in prayer,\u201d said Father Sean Suckiel, pastor of Holy Family Church in Fresh Meadows and American Martyrs Church in Bayside, who also helped organize the event. \u201cWe\u2019re going to be at his side in prayer, in unison today.\u201d\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For Midtown resident Rosita Perez, who was attending the procession for the third time, that prayer took on a personal form. She said she fasted that day for Pope Leo and the success of his surgery.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very, very happy to be here, especially because we have the Eucharist, walking with us,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m so emotional.\u201d\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For Father Suckiel, bringing the Eucharist beyond the walls of St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral is at the heart of the annual procession.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to bring Jesus into the midst of the chaos of New York City,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd for that moment, when Jesus walks through the streets of Manhattan, it\u2019s going to be peace.\u201d\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That public witness is what has kept the Napa Institute returning to Midtown for five years, according to its president, Mark Rohlena. He said organizers hope the procession reaches not only those who come specifically to participate, but also New Yorkers who stumble upon it during their commutes.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main thing is that Jesus will capture their attention if they\u2019re a person who\u2019s maybe in troubled circumstances or really searching for faith,\u201d Rohlena said. \u201cThis is an age right now where people are looking for authentic reasons to believe.\u201d\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetablet.org\/annual-eucharistic-procession-through-midtown-manhattan-draws-thousands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">RELATED: Annual Eucharistic Procession Through Midtown Manhattan Draws Thousands<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Others had been planning their trip for much longer. Vanessa Acero traveled from Westhampton, Long Island, after seeing last year\u2019s procession on TV and deciding she wanted to experience it herself.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just feel the beauty of the Church and the community coming together to worship Him,\u201d Acero said. \u201cBeing in this environment, praising Jesus and making Him more known is just so special. I\u2019m so honored.\u201d\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Matt Bush traveled even farther, coming from Washington, D.C., as he has each year. This time, he brought his young daughter.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I think of the future, and I think of the world that I\u2019d like her to be raised in, I think of the truth of the Catholic faith, I think of the beauty of the Catholic faith in the Eucharist and our Lord and Savior,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s a world that I want her to be raised in.\u201d\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>But as the procession moved through Manhattan, Bush found himself watching the people along the route, many of whom raised their phones to record what was passing before them.\u00a0<br class=\"SCXW128730185 BCX0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m watching people over here all mystified: \u2018What is this?
