Following the death of Her Majesty the Queen in 2022, her last two beloved corgis<\/a>, Muick and Sandy<\/a>, were taken in by her second son Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor<\/a> and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The couple, who got divorced in 1996, continued to live together harmoniously at Royal Lodge, Andrew’s royal home in Windsor Great Park – right up until they were unceremoniously evicted from the property by King Charles, that is.<\/p>\n

Andrew initially moved to Wood Farm<\/a> on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk without Sarah, but it was unclear whether the corgis would follow him to his temporary lodgings while he waited for renovations to be completed on what would become his new home, Marsh Farm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite no official confirmation of their whereabouts, pictures taken by the Daily Mail in February revealed Sandy and Muick<\/a>, the last two corgis owned by the late Queen, were in Sandringham. They were spotted enjoying some exercise on the grounds close to Wood Farm, where Andrew was staying<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The animals were being walked by two of the former prince’s staff members, suggesting they were still in his care.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why was Andrew placed in charge of the corgis?<\/p>\n

After the late Queen’s death at age 96, her pets were placed under the care of her second son. They were given to him for a very specific reason that involved his two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The princesses gifted their grandmother Muick and Sandy, having bought the two pups for the Queen to distract her from the stress of her husband, Prince Philip’s, hospital stay in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite their divorce in 1996, at the time of the Queen’s death, Andrew and Sarah still lived together in the Grade II-listed residence in Windsor. The estate was deemed the perfect new home for the dogs<\/a> with its 21 acres of secluded gardens and access to the wider Windsor Great Park, which covers 4,800 acres.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Andrew was stripped of his titles by his brother, King Charles in November 2025, following which Buckingham Palace released a statement that said: “The corgis will remain with the family”, making it unclear which family members they were referring to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How many corgis did the Queen own during her reign?<\/p>\n

Queen Elizabeth shared her love of dogs with the world throughout her time on the throne<\/a>, and she became especially known for her affiliation with the corgi breed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She ascended the throne in 1952 and has owned more than 30 corgis in her lifetime. At any given point, she had up to ten, and as well as Muick and Sandy at the time of her death, it is thought she also had one Dorgi (a dachshund\/corgi crossbreed), named Candy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sarah Ferguson’s disastrous first meeting with the Queen and her corgis<\/p>\n

Meeting members of the royal family is a daunting prospect for most. And for Sarah<\/a>, her first introduction<\/a> proved so nerve-wracking she ended up making a major blunder in front of the late Queen.<\/p>\n

Fergie first officially met Queen Elizabeth II when she was invited to a shooting weekend at Sandringham House after she began dating then-Prince Andrew.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They were not total strangers; Sarah’s father, Major Ronald Ferguson, managed the Guards Polo Club for Prince Philip, which meant Sarah occasionally crossed paths with the royal family and played tag with Andrew around the polo fields when they were children.<\/p>\n

But she was then invited to the monarch’s Norfolk estate as his partner – and it didn’t exactly go to plan.<\/p>\n

She said: “Sarah was invited to Sandringham for a shooting weekend because the Queen always believed that the only way her children are ever going to get to know anyone is to entertain them in one of the royal homes.<\/p>\n

“Her own mother and father had been to Sandringham for shooting weekends and obviously they had told her what to do so she was not completely ignorant of how it was going to work, but she was very nervous.”<\/p>\n
