A brazen weekend killing at a tourist-jammed Midtown subway station<\/a> has helped nearly double the number of transit slayings in the Big Apple so far this year compared to the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n

Police said Saturday\u2019s midday fatal shooting at the Seventh Avenue and 53rd Street station in Manhattan marked the seventh killing in the city\u2019s subway and bus system since January \u2014 with the gunman, who is described as armed and dangerous, still on the loose.<\/p>\n

There were four transit killings in the same period last year.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe subway was the cool thing about New York,\u201d said Gisela Medone, 44, a tourist from Miami who is in town with her mom and sister and staying at the Sheridan New York Hotel near the station, on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the New York experience is taking the subway, and we were looking forward to that. Now we\u2019re going to have to take Ubers everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The siblings\u2019 mom, Gracielo Medone, in town with the family to celebrate her other daughter Yamila\u2019s 41st birthday, said the shooting has put a damper on the trip \u2014 and promises to put a dent in their wallets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll walk,\u201d the 64-year-old mother said. \u201cIf we can\u2019t walk, we\u2019ll take cars. But everywhere, for five days, wasn\u2019t in the budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how we\u2019re going to afford it. Now there is a place or a meal we can\u2019t get, or we\u2019ll buy less souvenirs. The cab ride from the airport tried to rob us for $145. He said $75, and then when we got here, he said $145.\u201d<\/p>\n

The gunplay at the station at 53rd Street, which was packed with tourists at the time, indicates that transit violence is bucking the historic citywide drop in major crimes across the five boroughs.<\/p>\n

A man named Merrill, a 44-year-old private security guard from The Bronx, hopped a train at the station on Sunday, shrugging, \u201cI\u2019m not seeing anything new.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the crimes \u201clook like gang violence, and stabbings are usually homeless stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chalrton D\u2019Souza, founder and president of the grassroots group Passengers United, said the station where Saturday\u2019s shooting took place has long been plagued by problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s open drug use going on at this station,\u201d he told The Post. \u201cThere\u2019s people injecting hypodermic needles. There\u2019s a lot of gang activity in the station, a lot of people are selling drugs here.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is Gov. Kathy Hochul?\u201d D\u2019Souza said. \u201cWhere is our mayor? He didn\u2019t even issue a statement yesterday about this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police said the shooting took place around 12:20 p.m. Saturday when the victim and the gunman reportedly got into a dispute on the platform.<\/p>\n

The shooter struck the victim in the chest and fled the scene as straphangers scrambled for their lives. <\/p>\n

The suspected shooter should be considered armed and dangerous, police said. DCPI<\/p>\n

The killer, captured on surveillance footage wearing a red hoodie, red pants, a black vest and carrying a dark-colored backpack, remains on the loose and has been called armed and dangerous by cops.<\/p>\n

The victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n
