London restaurants are in love with New York City: Just this month, butter chef Thomas Straker opened his namesake restaurant<\/a> in Soho; earlier this year, Punjabi-leaning and impossible-to-get-into Indian restaurant Ambassadors Clubhouse<\/a> debuted in Nomad.<\/p>\n

In 2027, London Indian phenom Dishoom<\/a> is joining that party<\/a>. The heralded Indian restaurant is aiming to open its first U.S. location in March, according to executive chef Arun Kumar. Caper reported<\/a> earlier this year that the restaurant is opening in Nomad at 11 E. 26th Street, near Madison Avenue.<\/p>\n

Dishoom is raising its profile in the city ahead of the debut, where Kumar cooked a family-style dinner with the restaurant\u2019s famous chicken ruby (its spin on butter chicken); the chewy keema pau (spiced minced lamb with peas), the creamy lush black dal<\/a>, and the decadent lamb nihari biryani, served with its crust.<\/p>\n

Kumar joined chef Sujan Sarkar of NYC British Indian chophouse Elder<\/a> for a dinner benefiting Food Bank for NYC<\/a> on Tuesday, October 13. Sarkar made jackfruit cutlets with a piccalilli puree, and a roast duck atop ghee rice doused in Tellicherry peppercorn jus.<\/p>\n

Dishoom is an ode to the Iranian immigrant-owned all-day cafes from 1960s Mumbai \u2014 when the city was called Bombay. Co-founders Shamil Thakrar and Kavi Thakrar (who are cousins), and Amar Radia and Adarsh Radia opened the first restaurant in 2010. (The Radia brothers left<\/a> in 2017.) Dishoom expanded with locations across the United Kingdom and opened its all-day bar, Permit Room<\/a>. The company just expanded<\/a> with its eighth location in London\u2019s Borough Market last week. Dishoom tested the New York waters with a pop-up<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n

Dishoom\u2019s first expansion outside of the U.K. is happening with the help of investment<\/a> from private equity firm L Catterton, which partners with luxury goods company LVMH (Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Celine, etc.).<\/p>\n

Sarkar recently opened Elder<\/a>, his second full NYC restaurant after expanding his Chicago tasting menu Indienne<\/a> upstairs at the Hudson Yards building. Not to keep still, he\u2019s working on opening a South Asian cocktail bar, Apas, at the same address later this year.
