It’s been quite the spooky season for new horror in the NYC theater world lately with Paranormal Activity bringing big scares to its audiences, 2:22 A Ghost Story coming to us from the UK with major expectations, as well as another UK import, A Ghost in Your Ear<\/a> now playing at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre through December 12.<\/p>\n

I intentionally went in blind to A Ghost in Your Ear, expecting big things and not wanting to ruin any scares and truly I could not have had a better time.<\/p>\n

First of all it’s an Audible production and called A Ghost in Your Ear so I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect besides the fact that there were live actors performing. I thought maybe it would be some kind of live podcast type thing. Unlike An Ark – The Shed with its fully immersive 3d glasses and projected cast, this is in fact an actual staged play. However, you have to put on your headphones, provided in every seat, in order to hear anything, and as soon as you do, a creepy ASMR voice will talk to you as a prompt to confirm that your headphones are working correctly. The voice will also remind you that if you choose to leave you will not be allowed back ing, so we were good and prepared to be scared.<\/p>\n

The theater itself is rather small which soon proves to be a tremendous advantage to this marvelously immersive play sound designed by Tony nominees Ben & Max Ringham as I could not imagine the haunting effect of seeing the two actors close up to be half as effective from the rafters. The entire stage is behind a pane of glass and the conceit of the show is that an actor, Lucas (played by Lucas Iverson), has come to a soundbooth to work with a producer, Sid, (played by Owen Campbell), to perform a scary story and they were looking for “real fear” as Sid told Lucas in a short speech that may as well have been directed to the audience.<\/p>\n

Lucas delivers this scary script into a binaural microphone shaped like a mannequin head. The head is able to broadcast sound directly into either side of the audience’s ears and even has the eerie effect of the audio coming right behind you.<\/p>\n

There are no set changes, and all we see is the sound recording booth, and the producer’s room and then the reading starts and the scares begin. The setup in the story within the story is of a man going to inspect his long lost and now deceased father’s manor against his wishes in order to clean out the house and determine what’s valuable and what to throw away, and he has no idea of the frightful ordeal he will face, nor does Lucas know how much this frightful ordeal will affect him in the sound stage which somewhat ominously is locked when recording is live.<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that there are two actors, the majority of this plays 90 minutes functions as essentially a series of one man performances as Lucas chews up the scenery pacing back and forth on the stage with the head\/microphone and reciting the lines as if they were Shakespeare. Beyond the introductory remarks from his producer setting the scene, their only interactions are when things get too scary and Lucas needs to take a break as the other conceit of the show is that this performance has to be recorded tonight. The script by Tony nominee Jamie Armitage is very tightly paced and the lack of an intermission works to the show’s advantage in building tension which never lets up resulting in a well-earned dramatic conclusion that as a horror fan, has to be experienced without a reveal.<\/p>\n

I said earlier that I thought this might be some kind of live podcast type thing and indeed the haunting immersive sound really goes a long way towards producing that feeling, but on the other hand there are quite a number of scary visual and lighting effects that could not be duplicated in an audio only realm. However, according to Audible it will be recorded and released as an Audible Original, which means that the visual scares will have to be adapted somehow.<\/p>\n

I am forced to give A Ghost in Your Ear<\/a> my highest recommendation and urge you to experience it for yourself immediately at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theater 18 Minetta Lane New York, NY<\/p>\n
