Employment, stability, and an unsustainable lifestyle are common sources of stress for Gen Z and Millennials that are ripe for horror. There’s no shortage of material to subvert and satirize as Gen Z’s relationship with the workforce becomes increasingly toxic and burnout culture is normalized in high-stakes capitalist environments. Marion Le Coroller’s Species feels like a companion piece to the recent wave of visceral films from fearless female French directors, like Titane, Raw, and The Substance that engage with radical body horror that boldly holds a shattered mirror up to society to say something about culture’s twisted nature.

Species will inevitably be compared to these movies, particularly The Substance. They explore comparable themes and similarly disturbing imagery, but they’re still completely distinct. In fact, Le Coroller’s perspective feels more attuned to Yorgos Lanthimos’s work in its broadness and style of satire. It’s a fierce, fascinating film about the impossible, exhausting pursuit of perfection that doesn’t hold back and marks an extremely promising debut from filmmaker Le Coroller. Species is a timely and relevant social satire with a brutal bite that feels like Raw or The Sadness meets The Pitt.

Species follows Margot (Mara Taquin), a hard-working, determined, and optimistic medical student who begins an internship at a prestigious and high-traffic hospital under a cutthroat, perfectionist doctor. After Margot is exposed to a patient with an abnormal rash, she begins to experience her own irregular and bloody symptoms that only grow more gruesome. Her hunt for answers triggers the curious conclusion that these symptoms are spreading among 20-somethings who are specifically in stressful and demanding fields of work.

The illness’ disgusting side effects are directly connected to the high-pressure lifestyle that’s become the norm for so many young adults who are desperate to succeed. Species pulls from Le Coroller’s own real-life experience working in the finance sector and Margot’s workplace-centered stress takes on a suffocating degree of authenticity. The emergence of these conditions also happens to coincide with a rising wave of violence throughout the nation. Species cycles between ultra-violent acts of supernatural brutality and genuinely disgusting acts of ooey, gooey body horror.

There are some utterly insane prosthetics and practical effects that bring the film’s macabre metamorphoses and malicious massacres to life. There’s brutal, invasive, and unflinching surgery scenes that showcase squishy sound design that’s absolutely not for the faint of heart. It culminates in an extreme and out-of-control final set piece that’s really something to behold. The film’s special makeup effects designer, Pierre Olivier Persin, previously won an Oscar for his work on The Substance, which gives an idea of the film’s level of expertise. Guillaume Schiffman’s cinematography and heightened color palette are also incredible. There are so many creative techniques on display that turn Margot’s plight into an even more intimate experience.

So much of Species’ success is attributed to Taquin’s daring performance. There’s an earnest, innocent quality to Margot that makes her easy to root for as she undergoes this alarming transformation. Alternatively, the killer shark mode that she frequently shifts into is pulled off with just as much ease. The character’s mounting anguish is never forgotten and compounds over the course of the film.

Species’ extreme violence and blood-soaked complications are the film’s biggest showpieces and destined to become the movie’s most enduring talking points. The message behind these disturbing displays is equally poignant. It’s such a strong depiction of what it’s like when collective rage bubbles up in society until the population just snaps. It’s a raw, single-minded display of anger that reduces human beings to blunt tools of destruction. Species is absolutely obsessed with death, but it’s even more interested in life’s disposable nature and how all living bodies eventually become trash.

Similarly, it’s fascinating to see how this film digs into the robotic monotony of any routine task, regardless of the “value” that it provides to society. Species draws demoralizing parallels between working in a fast food restaurant and hospital work, as the two are regarded as equally stressful environments. Burger targets are juxtaposed against the extreme quotas that doctors face at Margot’s hospital, where they’re expected to treat 25 patients a day. It’s a style that’s antithetical to Margot’s more personalized and thorough approach to healthcare.

Species lambasts the burnout culture that defines so many modern workplace environments. However, this movie also channels a certain anxiety that’s rooted in the COVID-19 era. Species becomes an allegory for pent-up COVID rage and the difficulty many people faced in regaining a sense of normalcy after something so cataclysmic. It contributes to a grander anti-capitalist message that attacks the workforce’s devolution.

Marion Le Coroller’s Species is a revelation that combines gruesome gore with profound and prescient storytelling that’s a chilling reflection of the times. It’s not a perfect movie. Several of Margot’s relationships are clunky and underdeveloped, while certain stretches of the film are shaggy and repetitive. These are minor concessions for a body horror film that has such a clear point of view and passion. Species isn’t quite as strong as its female genre filmmaker reference points. It’s still an incredibly strong debut movie by Le Coroller, who is sure to have a rich, gooey career ahead of her.

Summary

Species is a vicious and ultra-gory meditation on burnout workplace culture that’s filtered through Gen Z apathy

Tags:Brooklyn Horror Film Festival Brooklyn Horror Film Festival 2026 Mara Taquin Marion Le Coroller Sanguine species

Categorized:Movies Reviews

“Not everyone has what it takes for the ER.” The best horror draws from very real places and…

[36
98,100,9156,138572,99,138677,138678,9,24,63,138679,138680
post-376981","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-brooklyn","tag-brooklyn","tag-brooklyn-headlines","tag-brooklyn-horror-film-festival","tag-brooklyn-horror-film-festival-2026","tag-brooklyn-news","tag-mara-taquin","tag-marion-le-coroller","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-sanguine","tag-species
["GET
