New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) on Tuesday expressed his support for Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and said his victory in the competitive Senate race would signal openness to a new political future in the country.<\/p>\n
During a press conference<\/a>, the mayor was asked by a reporter about whether he would back El-Sayed and other Democrats running in the midterm elections.<\/p>\n “I think that his victory and the victory of Democrats across this country is of critical importance to our city because what it also indicates is a willingness to chart a new course in Washington that has working people at the heart of it,” Mamdani said.<\/p>\n The mayor identified parallels between his administration’s goals and El-Sayed’s campaign objectives, specifically citing the Democratic nominee’s pushback on super PAC spending in politics and advocacy for issues like “Medicare for all” and bringing down the cost of living.\u00a0<\/p>\n “Those are concerns that ring true for Michiganders. They’re also concerns that ring true for New Yorkers,” Mamdani continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n The democratic socialist, who won<\/a> the mayoral race last year, added that his focus remained on the city’s five boroughs.<\/p>\n El-Sayed has pushed back on attempts to characterize him as a democratic socialist, instead labeling himself as a progressive populist candidate focused on addressing affordability concerns.<\/p>\n The Michigan Democrat is running in a tight race against former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) to replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.).<\/p>\n The Cook Political Report<\/a>, a nonpartisan election forecaster, rates this contest as a “toss up.”\u00a0Polls from Fox News<\/a> and Marist University<\/a> last month found El-Sayed with a narrow lead over his GOP opponent.\u00a0<\/p>\n
