With Election Day just two weeks away, 2 On Your Side talked with Western New York election experts about mail-in voting in New York State.

An executive order from March would have restricted mail-in voting. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to do that.

RELATED: 2026 Election Day Voter Guide

Jacob Neiheisel is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University at Buffalo. He says partisan bias when it comes to mail-in ballots is relatively new.

“This is something that we’ve seen a stunning turnaround on. It used to be that there was basically no partisan bias in who was using mail-in balloting, who was going to the polls early where that was available, versus those who went to the polls on Election Day,” said Jacob Neiheisel, UB Associate Professor, Political Science.

According to the Brookings Institution, a non-profit, non-partisan public policy think tank, fraud cases involving mail-in ballots are extremely rare with about four cases for every ten-million mail-in ballots in U.S. general elections from 2016 to 2022.

“It’s not just mail-in ballots that have a very low fraud rate. It’s just voter impersonation fraud in general is not something that happens with great frequency. It happens. There are cases of it, but again, as you mentioned, it is vanishingly rare,” said Neiheisel.

Oregon has had universal vote-by-mail elections for more than two decades, but no-excuse mail-in voting is still relatively new in New York. Neiheisel says it can be beneficial to people who can’t easily go out and vote on Election Day.

“Yes, it is absolutely something that can enhance accessibility to the polls. It’s not a huge effect among those who study these kinds of things, but at the margins, it is something that can increase turnout by a little bit,” Neiheisel said.

At the Erie County Board of Elections, the staff is busy sending out mail-in ballots.

“Mail-in ballots, can be requested from the Board of Elections up until midnight on Saturday,” said Ralph Mohr, (R) Erie County Election Commissioner.

You can also request one in-person at the Board of Elections through November 2nd.

“We’re just asking them to mail it back as soon as they get it because of the changes at the post office because they don’t postmark the mail like they used to in the past, but there’s no funny business happening,” said Howard Johnson, (D) Erie County Election Commissioner.

“There’s no change in mail-in or absentee ballots in New York. They’re secure. They’re going to be counted just like a regular vote either on early voting or on Election Day,” Mohr said.

So far, around 23,000 voters have requested mail-in ballots in Erie County for this election, which election commissioners say is normal for a year with a gubernatorial race. 9,000 to 10,000 have already filled them out and returned them.

Again, it’s not too late to apply for a ballot. If you decide you don’t want to mail-in your ballot, you can return it in-person at any early voting site starting Saturday, October 14, at any polling place in your county on Election Day, or to your county board of elections. Make sure you sign your ballot and follow the instructions. You can also track your ballot online to see when it’s received and counted. And, if you change your mind, you can always vote in-person as long as you haven’t already turned in your ballot.

“It’s not something that people should be afraid of. If this is the thing that they want to do, and this is the way they want to participate, there should not be much concern about that ballot,” Neiheisel said.

Mail-in voting is at the center of a national political debate, with the President pushing for the U.S.…

[6
9,11,10,49,51,50
post-378469","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-headlines","tag-new-york-news","tag-new-york-state","tag-new-york-state-headlines","tag-new-york-state-news
["GET
