NEW YORK (WABC) — New York City has installed red-light cameras at 600 intersections citywide, the maximum allowed under state law.

City officials say red light running was a factor in 22% of fatal intersection crashes between 2023 and 2025. Data also shows red light violations have dropped by more than 80% at camera locations.

Roughly one in 23 intersections across the city now have red light cameras.

“This behavior is not only selfish, it’s one of the most dangerous driving behaviors,” NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn said.

Assembly Member Diana Moreno said the expansion would help make city streets safer.

“The expansion of the red light camera program, which will cover 600 cameras across New York City, will undoubtedly save lives,” Moreno said.

Flynn said red-light running is a significant factor in deadly intersection crashes.

“Red light running is responsible for almost a quarter of all traffic fatalities at intersections,” he said.

The announcement also highlighted the toll of deadly crashes on families, including Carmen Larino, whose only daughter and youngest child, 38-year-old Karina Larino, was struck and killed while in a crosswalk near Astoria Park at Hoyt Avenue South and 21st Street in May 2022. Karina Larino had worked for the MTA for 17 years.

“At this intersection, this is where my beautiful daughter Karina Larino was killed,” Carmen Larino said.

“If anything can be done to avoid that, to avoid other families feeling the pain that I feel, that other families feel, yes, I will advocate,” she said.

The Department of Transportation said red-light cameras have reduced red-light running by 80% at camera locations. The agency also said T-bone crashes fell by 65% and rear-end collisions dropped by 49%.

State Sen. Kristin Gonzalez, who represents the Queens district, said she had attended memorial ceremonies for victims of traffic crashes.

“I attended white bike ceremony after white bike ceremony and stood right here on this corner with the family of Karina,” Gonzalez said.

“Whether it’s out-of-control cars or chaotic intersections, no child should simply be afraid to cross the street,” she said.

Flynn said the city would continue its efforts to improve street safety.

“We’re not going to stop until every street in this city is as safe as it can be,” he said.
