The shooting near the end of the evening rush snarled traffic for hours on the busy Hudson River span that connects Manhattan and Fort Lee, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Romero, of Haverstraw, New York, retired from the New York Police Department in 2001 after he was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2000\/06\/26\/shot-cops-heroism-helps-avert-massacre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wounded in the hand and chest in an off-duty shootout<\/a> with men attempting to rob his family\u2019s Brooklyn laundromat in June 2000. Using his service weapon, Romero shot one of the men in the stomach, arm and leg, and another man in the legs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/06\/26\/nyregion\/detective-is-shot-in-gun-battle-at-family-s-coin-laundry.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to news accounts<\/a> from the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A telephone number listed for Romero in public records rang unanswered. Information on a lawyer who could comment on his behalf was not immediately available. Romero, a drug detective in Brooklyn, had been working for the NYPD for six years when the laundromat shooting occurred, according to a New York Post article from the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Irvine worked for Con Edison, the utility said in a statement, calling the shooting a \u201csenseless act of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cOur deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Closed bridge lanes reopened about five hours after the shooting, the span\u2019s operator, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/goto?url=CAESewHrOzAVyXztVn_V4kwi4ioizbxmLMCAwMv8acQpBNHhY6bzlILJbSWdnQZeXznOcpfNwnD_N8QNlBE3kUrstogcTKviADIXqJkl1TRfK4Xkl-lJLVFvr19JOcxSXjVcGHHSVrTztBMPkvAq43cEEE0JP2JWKteBSLokcQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Port Authority of New York and New Jersey<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Opened to traffic in 1931, the iconic, double-decked bridge carries around 100 million vehicles each year, according to the Port Authority, which calls it the world\u2019s busiest. The bridge and its entrances are teeming with cameras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Its entrances can be difficult to navigate, as drivers often veer across packed lanes, causing heavy traffic even under normal circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
