The New York Times<\/a> reports that campaigns have spent more than $137 million on AI\u00a0ads, noting that researchers from Wesleyan University\u00a0identified more than 220 such examples.<\/p>\nBut Reeher says campaigns’ other uses of AI may be \u201cunder the radar\u201d right now.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to be huge in our political system whether that\u2019s identifying likely voters, coming up with canvassing plans, crafting messages,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Chamber of Progress works with Congress and state lawmakers to advance AI governance.<\/p>\n
Its vice president of U.S. and Government Relations, KJ Bagchi, says AI is \u201cgreat at making a campaign more efficient, but it\u2019s not great at being a substitute for having no message.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says there\u2019s also a difference in how Democrats and Republicans are using it.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou see Democrats using it technically more for research aspects of it, and we tend to see the Republican side use it more for ad generation,\u201d said Bagchi.<\/p>\n
He says campaigns using AI in general tend to make some voters cautious.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the difficult part is that studies show that when voters see an image or they see a video that\u2019s AI-generated that has that label on it, they tend to lose trust in what that message is,\u201d said Bagchi.<\/p>\n
Polling from Pew Research<\/a> in 2025 supports this.
