{"id":38027,"date":"2025-11-13T05:43:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T05:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/38027\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T05:43:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T05:43:15","slug":"trump-signs-funding-bill-to-end-historic-43-day-government-shutdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/38027\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump signs funding bill to end historic, 43-day government shutdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump signed a funding bill Wednesday\u00a0to end\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/10\/us-news\/senate-passes-revised-government-funding-bill-sends-it-back-to-the-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the longest government shutdown<\/a>\u00a0in US history, hours after the House of Representatives passed legislation\u00a0ending\u00a0the 43-day standoff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an honor now to sign this incredible bill and get our country working again,\u201d Trump said in the Oval Office, flanked by House Republican leaders as well as business and union leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The president blasted \u201cextremist\u201d Democrats for shutting down the government, accusing them of attempting to \u201cextort American taxpayers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Trump said that the Democrats were attempting to \u201cextort American taxpayers\u201d by shutting down the government. AP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cost the country $1.5 trillion,\u201d Trump said of the shutdown, describing it as a \u201clittle excursion\u201d that Democrats took \u201cpurely for political reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump re-upped his demand for Senate Republicans to \u201cterminate\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/06\/us-news\/dem-rep-jamie-raskin-backs-off-calls-to-eliminate-filibuster-now-that-trump-is-lobbying-for-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the filibuster<\/a> \u2014 so that \u201cthis would never happen again\u201d \u2014 and called for the \u201cmassive amount\u201d of federal funding for Obamacare to be \u201cpaid directly to the people of our country, so that they can buy their own healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a 222-209 vote, the House voted to pass the funding bill it received from the Senate which will restart paychecks for federal workers and air traffic controllers, and fund food assistance programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The legislation finally \u201creopens the government, restores critical services, and puts an end to the needless hardship Democrats have inflicted on the country,\u201d said GOP House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole of Oklahoma.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives voted in favor of the bill in a 222-209 vote on Wednesday REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel very relieved tonight,\u201d House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters after the vote. \u201cThe Democrat shutdown is finally over thanks to House and Senate Republicans, who stood together to get the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/10\/us-news\/lefty-dems-go-scorched-earth-over-ending-government-shutdown-take-aim-at-embattled-schumer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johnson slammed Democrats<\/a> for using \u201cthe American people as leverage in this political game,\u201d arguing that the outcome was \u201ctotally foreseeable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that is very difficult to forgive,\u201d he continued, describing the shutdown \u201cstunt\u201d as \u201cutterly pointless and foolish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump signed the stopgap funding bill after the House passed it to end the longest government shutdown\u00a0in US history on Wednesday. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>House Democrats lamented that their Senate Democratic colleagues caved with nothing to show for it on healthcare, their stated political reason for holding the government hostage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI rise in opposition to this bill that does nothing, not one thing to address the Republican health care crisis, amid a cost-of-living crisis,\u201d Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) said in a floor speech ahead of the vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In his speech, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/09\/us-news\/nyc-councilman-chi-osse-gears-up-for-primary-challenge-against-hakeem-jeffries-sources\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> (D-NY) proclaimed, \u201cThis fight is not over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats will continue to press the case to say to our Republican colleagues, you have another opportunity to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits,\u201d Jeffries said Tuesday. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Greg Steube (R-Fla.), voted against the Senate-passed bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could not in good conscience support a resolution that creates a self-indulgent legal provision for certain senators to enrich themselves by suing the Justice Department using taxpayer dollars,\u201d Steube\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepGregSteube\/status\/1988779185607983399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said of his no vote on X<\/a>, referring to a provision in the bill that allows Republican senators snooped on by former special counsel Jack Smith to seek compensation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Flights were heavily impacted from the shutdown, with delays occurring at airports across the country.
