The New York Giants surrendered 34 straight points to the New Orleans Saints last Sunday. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson was critical on Thursday of the effort of players he felt did not hustle to the ball, calling it \u201cunacceptable\u201d and calling them \u201ctraitors to the defense.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA few plays got out, especially in the pass game, because of missed tackles. Then last week, we\u2019re not happy, and I wasn\u2019t happy with our effort running to the ball,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cWe put some stuff on tape that was not characteristic of a New York Giant defense, and it\u2019s unacceptable, and it will be changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI look at guys that don\u2019t run [to] the ball, and I call them traitors because they\u2019re traitors to the defense. At the end of the day, when you have a traitor to the defense, you either have to make adjustments to get them off the field, you have to get somebody else on the field, or they have to correct their behaviors. Last week was one of those things where we did not, on every play, run to the ball, and it was unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wilson did not specify the play or plays he was referring to. He was adamant, though, that he won\u2019t tolerate it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe guys know it, and this week when you see them out there, they will be flying around 100 miles per hour with a hair on fire,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cIt\u2019s 11-1 when you play defense. It\u2019s 11 guys humming to the ball, and when you don\u2019t do that, you don\u2019t erase plays. We had a few plays that got out on us.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody\u2019s hunting. It\u2019s probably not a touchdown. You get them down on the ground. It\u2019s not an explosive play. You eliminate explosive plays with energy and effort. That\u2019s how you eliminate it.\u201d<\/p>\n
This might be the play that annoyed Wilson the most:<\/p>\n
Nickel cornerback Dru Phillips on Thursday took accountability for his part in the play. He said it was \u201cembarrassing\u201d to be called out in front of his teammates.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have 10 other guys depending on you as well. You can\u2019t expect just one guy to make a tackle,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cThese guys are depending on you, and when you\u2019re just not giving that hustle that you should be you feel like I let this person down, or I let everybody down.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no excuse for it. I\u2019ve gotta hustle.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Giants were one of the worst tackling teams in the NFL in Week 6.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast week was one of our worst tackling games for whatever reason,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n
Wilson said he has no issue calling out players<\/p>\n
\u201cWe confront everything,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cIf you\u2019re not doing something to help the team and you\u2019re hurting the team, if your effort is bad, if you have a lack of toughness, it gets pointed out, and it gets pointed out in front of everybody. Not only in a defensive meeting, it gets pointed out in the full team meeting.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you have behaviors that\u2019s unacceptable, we\u2019re not going to accept it.
