While most hunters are gearing up for the opening day of whitetail deer season, thousands of others are heading into the woods with a different goal, to harvest a black bear.

Black Bear Sightings Are Increasing Across Western New York

Over the last few years, black bear sightings in residential areas have become more common across Western New York and beyond. Wildlife experts continue to remind residents to keep their properties as unattractive to bears as possible.

That means taking down bird feeders, securing garbage cans, and cleaning up anything that might attract a bear looking for food. Keeping your property clean and scent-free is one of the best ways to prevent a curious bear from wandering too close.

Some Want Bears Gone And Others Are Hoping to See One

While some New Yorkers are trying hard to keep bears out of their yards, others are hoping to spot one in the woods this weekend. For hunters, the start of black bear season marks one of the most exciting times of the year.

Opening day for black bear season in New York’s Southern Zone begins 30 minutes before sunrise on Saturday, November 15.

If you’re heading out, check the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) website for specific zone boundaries. The Northern Zone season has been open since September 13, and both zones will close on December 7. For those who prefer archery or muzzleloader hunting, a late season begins December 8 across the state.

Bear Sightings on Trail Cameras in Western New York

I’ve only seen one bear up close while out in the woods here in Western New York, but trail cameras have captured plenty of activity and sometimes even bears with cubs! Most of the bear movement I’ve noticed happens in the spring, though sightings in the fall are becoming more common. If you’re heading out this season, make sure your gear and strategy are ready for anything.

Read More: The “New Hunter” Law In Place In New York State

Know the Rules and Stay Safe

Bear hunting follows many of the same regulations as whitetail deer hunting in New York. Hunters are encouraged to review DEC guidelines before heading out and to keep safety top of mind, especially when hunting in areas that might overlap with other outdoor users.

A Look Ahead at the Weekend Forecast

The forecast for opening weekend calls for dry conditions in the morning with a chance of rain in the afternoon. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of hunting in the rain, but maybe that’s when the bears move! Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or trying your luck for the first time, best of luck this weekend and throughout the season. From what I can tell, it’s shaping up to be a great time to hunt black bear in New York State.

Friends Kill Massive Bucks On The Same Day In WNY

Gallery Credit: Clay Moden

There’s a growing fall tradition across New York State, and it’s not just about deer.
