CHURCHILL — As the temperature cooled outside with a late October snowstorm, Manhattan Christian got off to a hot start Friday night in the Memorial Event Center.

The Eagles scored the first 10 points of the match and never looked back in a 25-6, 25-12, 25-15 nonconference victory against Three Forks. The win capped an unbeaten regular season for the Eagles, who improve to 15-0.

“At the beginning of the year, we had a major goal just to go the whole season undefeated, and we wanted to go undefeated in sets, but we didn’t,” junior outside hitter Ashlyn Burley, who had 10 kills and 10 digs in the match, said. “But that’s completely okay, and we kind of just set that goal. And if we did drop a game, to not be upset about it or anything, just stay positive and keep playing.”

Excluding the season-opening Choteau Invitational, which Manhattan Christian won, the team has dropped just two sets this season and has only been pushed to four sets by Belt and Twin Bridges. It’s the second time the program has gone unbeaten in the regular season. The 2020 team went 18-0 and lost just three sets during Covid pandemic.

Manhattan Christian’s Brielle Sander Friday in a non-conference match against Three Forks in the Memorial Event Center.

Eagles head coach Hanna Van Dyk feels this year’s team is playing well heading into the District 12C Tournament, which begins Oct. 29 in Churchill.

“This is a really good team. They’re doing better than they have in years,” she said. “I think our hitting percentage is looking better. Our serving percentage is looking better. Defensively, we’re plugging holes really well. So I really like what we’re seeing in this postseason. Some of our errors I’d like to cut down. I feel like they’re a little bit silly and less thoughtful. I want us to be more intentional, but overall, I just really like where their girls are at right now.”

Freshman Brielle Sander got the Eagles off on the right foot against Three Forks, serving up the first 10 points of the match. She finished with five of the team’s 16 aces.

“I think it shows a lot of poise from Brielle as a freshman. She’s such a good server, she serves with a lot of intention and direction and confidence, and I think that shows,” said VanDyk. “And then the girls just came out, we had one attack error, no service errors that set. So you couldn’t really ask for a better set of volleyball from a high school team.”

Three Forks (7-7) never recovered from the early deficit and trailed 16-1 following an ace by Karissa Van Kirk. The senior finished with six kills and six aces for the Eagles.

“We just didn’t get off the bus,” Wolves head coach Aspen Hankinson said. “We’re facing some adversity as a team. We’re out two of our starters. We have a few JV girls that are playing up that have never played varsity before, so we’re trying new things, and obviously tonight wasn’t our night for that. No excuses though, we had a plan and we just didn’t execute.”

Junior Aleigha Hankinson and sophomore Emery Judd did not play for the Wolves, and coach Hankinson said Aleigha Hankinson is likely out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. However, Judd is expected to return.

“She (Aleigha Hankinson) was our top kill leader, top block leader in the conference. She’s a big part of our front row, so we’re definitely missing her,” said coach Hankinson. “We got some big shoes to fill, but I’m confident in our girls that will fill in her spot can help us out.”

Three Forks libero Hailey Williams passes the ball Friday in a non-conference match against Manhattan Christian in the Memorial Event Center.

With Aleigha Hankinson and Judd out of the lineup, Three Forks finished with just 12 kills. Manhattan Christian tallied 31 kills and only trailed briefly in the third set before taking control with an 8-1 run for a 16-10 lead.

Van Kirk had eight digs, while Markelle Johnson and Burley combined for 3.5 blocks. The Wolves were led by Alayna Paye and Reese Lein, who each had four kills. Hailey Williams led the defense with six digs.

Manhattan Christian has a first-round bye in the district tournament as the No. 1 seed and plays the winner of Shields Valley-West Yellowstone in a quarterfinal match at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

Burley said the team’s mindset heading into the postseason is to control the controllables, limit mistakes, and to serve a strong game.

“Our mindset is kind of just like do what you can do,” she added. “And if you can’t control your errors, and if you’re not playing good, bring your other teammates up, so everyone is just playing as a team.”

Three Forks wraps up the regular season Saturday hosting Lone Peak and then turns its attention to the District 5B Tournament, which is Oct. 29-30 at Manhattan High. The Wolves will likely be the No. 4 seed and play at 9 a.m. Thursday.

“Heading into postseason, I’m pretty confident on that we’ll have Emery Judd back, so that’ll be nice to have her. She’s one of our top hitters and defensive players, so just having her back will change the whole dynamic,” coach Hankinson said. “Unfortunately, Aleigha’s out for the rest of the season, so we have some big shoes to fill with her. But honestly, I feel like I’m confident going into it. It just depends if we show up, the team shows up that day. We’ve been a little up and down with showing up, and so we’ll see what happens.”
