James Keivom<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, apartment hunters have found little relief from eye-popping prices in other boroughs.<\/p>\n<p>The median rent on a Brooklyn lease in October was $3,850 \u2013 up 6.9% from previous year and the third-highest number on record.<\/p>\n<p>In Northwest Queens, including Astoria and parts of Long Island, the median rent jumped to $3,598 \u2013 up 7.4% on a yearly basis.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, apartment hunters were active in October amid a low housing supply, pushing rents up, Jonathan Miller, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-11-13\/manhattan-rent-prices-climb-near-record-in-month-before-mamdani-elected-mayor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">president of Miller Samuel, told Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani ran his campaign on such affordability issues \u2013 promising to freeze the rent on rent-stabilized apartments, offer free buses and open city-owned grocery stores.<\/p>\n<p>Housing costs have continued to climb for renters, who account for two out of three NYC residents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/05\/us-news\/trump-faces-greatest-test-in-delivering-on-affordability-before-2026-midterms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cost-of-living was top of mind for voters<\/a> in recent elections across the country, which saw many Dems \u2013 including Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger in the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races \u2013 clinch victories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The median rent on new leases was $4,600 in October \u2013 the third-highest figure on record. Christopher Sadowski<\/p>\n<p>A whopping 72% of voters in New York City noted that housing costs, specifically, are a major problem, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/top-stories\/latest\/exit-poll-shows-economy-affordability-top-mind-voters-rcna242018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">NBC News exit poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wall Street has feared Mamdani\u2019s election, concerned that his plan to tax the rich could <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/03\/us-news\/nearly-a-million-new-yorkers-ready-to-flee-nyc-if-mamdani-becomes-mayor-poll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ignite an exodus of wealthy New Yorkers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As of October, \u201cthere is no exodus coming out of New York,\u201d Miller told Bloomberg, citing heated leasing and home sales activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t have rising rent prices and leasing activity if there\u2019s an exodus from the city \u2013 it shows just the opposite,\u201d he added. \u201cHousing affordability is getting worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Manhattan\u2019s luxury real estate market, median prices jumped to $11,995 in October \u2013 up a staggering 20% from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>A major part of Mamdani\u2019s campaign was his YIMBY pitch to ramp up affordable housing projects.
