NEW YORK (VINnews) \u2014 New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism from Jewish and Polish community leaders over a tribute to Eastern European immigrants that omitted any direct reference to Jews, despite featuring Jewish cultural landmarks and artist Marc Chagall.<\/p>\n

New Yorkers experience the abundant contributions of our Eastern European neighbors every day. As we pair syrniki with sour cream in Brighton Beach, look in wonder at a Chagall painting at MoMA and banter with babushkas in Rego Park.<\/p>\n

Last week, we celebrated Eastern European heritage at Gracie Mansion, because the story of New York City cannot be told without the story of our Eastern European neighbors.<\/p>\n

From new immigrants to those who\u2019ve lived here for generations, Eastern Europeans have built New York City. We owe them a city they can afford to call home.<\/p>\n

The controversy followed an Eastern European cultural reception at Gracie Mansion last week. In a social media post Monday, Mamdani praised immigrants from the region for helping shape New York City but did not specifically acknowledge the contributions of its Jewish communities, Ynet News reported.<\/p>\n

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt sharply criticized the omission, arguing that recognizing Chagall and neighborhoods with significant Jewish populations without identifying their Jewish heritage overlooked an important part of the city\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Chagall was born into a Jewish family in what is now Belarus. Brighton Beach in Brooklyn and Rego Park in Queens have also long been home to substantial Jewish communities, including immigrants from the former Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

All of my grandparents are from Eastern Europe \u2014 because we are Diaspora Jews \u2014 forced out of our homeland (Israel) for centuries, due to antisemitism.<\/p>\n

Most of my family died in the Holocaust. We don\u2019t consider ourselves “Eastern European” \u2013 we are Jews. <\/p>\n

Every day I pray that Mayor Mamdani does not usher in another time of forced migration and oppression for my people.<\/p>\n

The mayor also drew objections for replacing a traditional Polish heritage breakfast at Gracie Mansion with a broader event celebrating Eastern European communities. Critics said the approach failed to recognize the distinct histories and traditions of groups including Poles, Ukrainians and Russians.<\/p>\n

Grzegorz Fryc, a Polish American activist and business leader, told the New York Post that combining the communities into one celebration was disrespectful. He also faulted Mamdani for not attending the annual Pulaski Day Parade.<\/p>\n

The dispute follows criticism of a city-produced map of immigrant neighborhoods released in July to help visitors navigate New York during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ynet reported that the map highlighted several immigrant enclaves while leaving out established Jewish, Italian and Irish communities.<\/p>\n

The latest criticism has added to a broader debate over how the Mamdani administration recognizes the histories and cultural identities of New York\u2019s immigrant communities. The report did not include a response from the mayor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Mayor Mamdani is wrong to frame this only as \u201cEastern European\u201d heritage while omitting the Jewish character. Marc Chagall was born Moishe Shagal to a Jewish family in the Pale of Settlement. Brighton Beach was built by Soviet Jewish immigrants. Rego Park has long been a major Jewish neighborhood. Those facts are not optional.<\/p>\n
