Italian<\/a> neorealist master Roberto Rossellini<\/a>, though he died in 1977, turns 120 this year. In celebration, major retrospective series are coming up in New York and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, Cinecitt\u00e0, and the Italian Ministry of Culture will present \u201cRoberto Rossellini Prefers Real Life\u201d at the Academy Museum<\/a> in L.A. beginning November 4 and 5. On November 20 through December 10, Film Forum in New York<\/a> will host the 25-film<\/a> \u201cRossellini 120.\u201d IndieWire shares exclusive details as well as a trailer for the Academy Museum series above.<\/p>\n

Rossellini is best known for his films with his third wife, Ingrid Bergman, including \u201cStromboli,\u201d \u201cEurope \u201951,\u201d \u201cFear,\u201d \u201cJourney to Italy,\u201d and \u201cJoan of Arc at the Stake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rossellini\u2019s family \u2014 including daughter Isabella Rossellini, who will present the films \u2014 as well as Cinecitt\u00e0 CEO Manuela Cacciamani, and Amy Homma, president of the Academy Museum, will attend. The Academy Museum series will run through November 30.<\/p>\n

The retrospective\u2019s title is inspired by Fran\u00e7ois Truffaut\u2019s famous 1963 essay, in which he recognized Rossellini as the father of the French New Wave.<\/p>\n

The program includes Rossellini films \u201cRome, Open City,\u201d \u201cPaisan,\u201d \u201cGermany, Year Zero.\u201d The lineup also includes Guy Maddin\u2019s \u201cMy Dad Is 100 Years Old,\u201d featuring Isabella Rossellini, and the documentaries \u201cViva Ingrid!\u201d by Alessandro Rossellini and \u201cRossellini Through His Own Eyes\u201d by Adriano Apr\u00e0.<\/p>\n

The Academy Museum audience will also see the world premiere of Cinecitt\u00e0\u2019s new 4K restoration of \u201cFear\u201d from 1954, which was Rossellini\u2019s last film with Bergman. The Venice Classics premiere of the restored \u201cJourney to Italy \u201d will also make its way to the United States.<\/p>\n

Isabella Rossellini, who will be present at the Academy Museum on November 4 and 5 and on the opening night of the Film Forum edition, said, \u201cMy father belief that films are more than entertainment. Cinema could bring awareness, knowledge and understanding. These were the guiding forces of his work. Father\u2019s curiosity and love for life has always been an inspiration to me. I am so happy I can see again his films on the big screen and share them with the Academy audience.
