The beloved, Texas-born tap-dancing star bought the posh pad at 400 E. 52nd St., on a charming cul-de-sac between First Avenue and the East River, for around $1.3 million in 2007. At the time, he had been visiting his pal Shirley MacLaine in a unit below it.<\/p>\n
The penthouse comes with a massive 1,800-square-foot wraparound terrace that\u2019s bigger than most New York City apartments. It boasts an outdoor shower, as well as plenty of room for entertaining.<\/p>\n
Tune hosted many events on the terrace over the years, including one for the late stage, screen and television star Carol Channing \u2014 and 200 of Channing\u2019s and Tune\u2019s Broadway friends. He also told Gimme that he once hosted \u201ca very elegant party for everyone who worked in the corporate offices of Chanel because they supplied Carol Channing a lifetime of No. 5 lipstick,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also an open kitchen, one bedroom and a spa-like bath. Design details include oak plank floors and built-ins, as well as a custom art ladder that is used to display Tune\u2019s 10 Tony Awards. It\u2019s all underneath nearly 14-foot-high ceilings that suit his 6-foot-6-inch frame.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe penthouse tower has served as Tommy\u2019s creative retreat for years,\u201d Lewis said. Indeed, Tune once told Gimme Shelter that he had painted more than 100 artworks from the apartment.<\/p>\n

At 87, Tune is still traveling and spending time in another apartment he owns nearby.
