Oscar-nominated actress Barbara Barrie has died after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. <\/p>\n
She was 95 years old. <\/p>\n
[\u00a0Read more trending news<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n Her daughter, Jane Harnick, said her mother died at her Manhattan home and that her death was medically assisted, The New York Times<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n Barrie said she had been diagnosed in 2014 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. She also had been diagnosed with rectal cancer in 1994, the Los Angeles Times<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n The actress\u2019s representatives told the Los Angeles Times<\/a> that she advocated for New York\u2019s Medical Aid in Dying Act, which took effect in August.<\/p>\n Barrie was born Barbara Berman in Chicago in 1931, but her family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. She went to Del Mar College, majoring in journalism, but became interested in acting, People magazine<\/a> reported. She eventually transferred to the University of Texas, where she earned drama awards, before moving to New York after graduation. <\/p>\n She made her Broadway debut in \u201cThe Wooden Dish\u201d in 1955 and went on to appear in several productions in New York. <\/p>\n Barrie also appeared on television and the big screen, with her first movie role in \u201cGiant.\u201d She also appeared in shows such as \u201cRoute 66,\u201d \u201cDr. Kildare,\u201d and \u201cThe Twilight Zone.\u201d<\/p>\n Her first big movie role was \u201cOne Potato, Two Potato,\u201d for which she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. She was a divorc\u00e9e who is in an interracial relationship with Bernie Hamilton. <\/p>\n \u201cTo me the story of the picture is primarily the dilemma of a woman. The racial part seemed coincidental,\u201d she told The New York Times<\/a> in 1964. \u201cSince we actresses are all narcissistic people, I read it for the part first. She appeared in 11 episodes of the show. She also appeared on \u201cSuddenly Susan,\u201d \u201cLaw & Order,\u201d and \u201cLaw & Order: SVU.\u201d On the big screen, she was in \u201cPrivate Benjamin\u201d and lent her voice to the Disney film \u201cHercules.\u201d<\/p>\n
