(AP Photo\/Vera Nieuwenhuis, File)ASSOCIATED PRESS<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X4SYJRBEH5HNTDBSEUTMISE2VU\">Wally Backman<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5JGYLGRQWNEBRNRU5OLKQP4WYU\">One former Atlantic League manager currently out of a head coaching role is Wally Backman, who led the Long Island Ducks from 2019 to 2023 and was a member of the New York Mets\u2019 legendary 1986 World Series\u2013winning team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6SQ3N3WWYFEWJPLXL26QZZMSSU\">Backman, who guided the Long Island Ducks to a 284\u2013232 record during his tenure, has managed in the minor and independent leagues since the 1990s. He earned Sporting News\u2019 Minor League Manager of the Year honor in 2004, when he led the Lancaster JetHawks, the Arizona Diamondbacks\u2019 High-A affiliate, to an 86\u201354 record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K22RCUG33FGQNE2YBGZAW6NJYE\">In addition to his time playing for the Mets, Backman also coached the Brooklyn Cyclones during the 2010 season, further cementing his New York City ties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NSEMIYJ34BHLVCSNRECZMV5HQQ\">He was even a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2010\/11\/17\/backman-one-of-four-getting-second-interview-with-mets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2010\/11\/17\/backman-one-of-four-getting-second-interview-with-mets\/\">candidate<\/a> for the Mets\u2019 managerial position during their 2011 vacancy.
