STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The New York City Housing Authority is moving forward with a $32 million plan to bring new energy-efficient induction stoves to its residents.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and NYCHA announced the next phase of their \u201cInduction Stove Challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n
The challenge, first announced in July 2023<\/a>, asked appliance manufacturers to design and produce energy-efficient, electric cooking systems to replace existing fossil fuel stoves while avoiding costly electrical upgrades in NYCHA buildings.<\/p>\n The agencies announced Thursday that they had signed a contract with Copper, an appliance manufacturer, to develop, pilot and produce 10,000 new energy-efficient induction stoves for use in NYCHA buildings.<\/p>\n \u201cThe execution of this contract brings us closer to the production and piloting of affordable, energy-efficient induction stoves, which will alleviate the amount of service outages and the need for costly capital investments caused by the deterioration of aging gas plumbing infrastructure in our properties,\u201d said NYCHA Chief Executive Officer Lisa Bova-Hiatt.<\/p>\n Copper will now begin the process of designing and producing prototype units that will be installed in 100 NYCHA apartments for testing. All households participating in the pilot will also receive new cookware.<\/p>\n If the pilot proves successful, NYCHA will move forward with the purchase of up to 10,000 units, which will then be installed in dozens of NYCHA buildings across the five boroughs.<\/p>\n \u201cCopper is proud to partner with New York on a project that puts residents first.
