It may have been for the best. There were questions that Abrams needed to answer, and New York, in the heat of a playoff race, was not the place for experimentation.

For the most part, the 26-year-old’s performance down the stretch provided the right answers. Entering 2026, Abrams was a poor second-half performer with a .649 career OPS after the All-Star Break. With a .791 OPS down the stretch in 2026, he wasn’t as sensational as he was in the first half, but he answered the bell.

On top of that, his defense at shortstop had become no longer tenable. The question was where he’d end up defensively. The Nationals started trying him out at second base, and while the sample was just 103 innings, the results were decent, with 1 DRS and 0 OAA. Guess who happens to have a gaping hole at second base? That’s right, the Yankees!

That’s restarted the speculation that New York and Washington could engage in trade talks for Abrams’ services this offseason. Adding a 30-30 bat to the Yankees’ lineup while filling the second base void sounds great on paper, but in practice it will be expensive.

The Yankees aren’t the only ones who could be in Abrams’ market. The Red Sox were confirmed to have engaged in talks with the Nationals for Abrams before pivoting to his teammate, Curtis Mead, when they found out the price. Still, Boston needs to add a power bat to their lineup, and that could lead them to begin barking up this tree again. Other clubs will surely have interest as well. That means the Yankees will have to pay up if they’re going to swing a deal.

A CJ Abrams trade would be expensive, but the Yankees are uniquely positioned to win a bidding war

With two years of team control remaining, Washington still has a good deal of leverage, even if most believe they’ll eventually divorce Abrams. They could wait until the trade deadline or next offseason to trade him, though this winter represents their best chance to get maximum value for the former first-round pick.

The Nationals’ priority at the trade deadline was adding controllable pitching, and they could still use help in that regard. They acquired left-handed starter Connelly Early from the Red Sox for Mead, as well as a quartet of relief-type arms, led by Yovanny Cruz, in exchange for Luis Garcia Jr. It’s clear that Washington likes New York’s pitching pipeline, and nine of the Yankees’ current top-10 prospects per MLB Pipeline are pitchers.

The Nationals probably ask for Will Warren, but the Yankees push back and instead offer Elmer Rodriguez as a major league-ready starter, saving the more proven arm for themselves. No. 9 prospect Rory Fox’s stock rose in 2026, and with him cracking Double-A this year, he’s another starting-caliber hurler who isn’t all that far off from the bigs.

Anthony Volpe becomes redundant for New York, as the double-play combo becomes George Lombard Jr. at short and Abrams at second, while Jose Caballero handles utility infielder duties. He’ll give the Nationals three more years of team control and could be a change-of-scenery candidate who can fill the void in the middle of Washington’s infield.

Finally, 2025 eighth-round pick Mac Heuer gives the Nationals an intriguing lottery-ticket type of arm. The hulking Texas Tech product debuted in 2026 as a starter with strikeout stuff, but with some command issues. If he ultimately doesn’t refine his control, he could still pan out to be an impact reliever.

Giving up this much talent will hurt, but the Yankees are better off with Abrams in the fold. Rodriguez is behind Warren and Ryan Weathers in the pecking order and doesn’t have much opportunity to break through the Yankees’ rotation, with Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Rodón having the first four rotation spots locked up for the foreseeable future.

At the end of the day, trading from a position of strength to solve needs is smart business, and that’s what this proposal does. Abrams fills what is potentially the Yankees’ biggest hole, and if the club believes that Garcia Jr. can play third base, then the infield is solved, and Brian Cashman can turn his attention to building up the bullpen. Throw in some depth moves, and the offseason is pretty much complete.

Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow

Ultimately, the trade deadline buzz connecting the New York Yankees to Washington Nationals star CJ Abrams was all…

[38
128,9,24,63,129,131,130
post-388874","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-the-bronx","tag-bronx","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-the-bronx","tag-the-bronx-headlines","tag-the-bronx-news
["GET
