WASHINGTON \u2014 The Trump administration formally designated\u00a0four\u00a0violent left-wing groups<\/a>\u00a0based in Europe as\u00a0foreign terrorist organizations<\/a>\u00a0as part of a broad crackdown on extremism.<\/p>\n

The State Department <\/a>announced the intended designation on Thursday, saying the Antifa groups \u2014 Antifa Ost, the International Revolutionary Front, Armed Proletarian Justice, and Revolutionary Class Self Defense \u2014 \u201cuse force against those they identify as opponents of their Marxist and anarchist projects.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0thugs\u00a0from Germany, Italy and Greece have carried out dozens of attacks in Europe over recent years \u2014 including assaults, bombings of government buildings and shootings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe anarchists, Marxists, and violent extremists of Antifa have waged a terror campaign in the United States and across the Western world for decades, carrying out bombings, beatings, shootings, and riots in service of their extreme agenda,\u201d said State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe State Department is committed to identifying and dismantling these terror networks that conspire to ruthlessly suppress the will of the people and violently undermine the very foundations of the United States and Western Civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n

The designation will also bar the radicals from accessing the US financial system and prosecute those that support them, officials added.<\/p>\n

Antifa Ost (East), based in Germany and known for using hammers in assaults, conducted several attacks between 2018 and 2023 \u2014 including in a counter-demonstration against a neo-Nazi march in February 2023 in Budapest.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not to be expected\u00a0that this circle of individuals will turn away from violence,\u201d a report from Germany\u2019s Interior Ministry stated about the group. \u201cIt is rather to be\u00a0feared that, over time, a further radicalisation will take place.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Italy-based International Revolutionary Front, also known as the Informal Anarchist Federation, promotes \u201crevolutionary armed conflict\u201d against its government, State Department officials also noted.<\/p>\n

Two of its militants kneecapped a nuclear engineering executive in a May 2012 shooting,\u00a0according to The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n

West Point\u2019s Combating Terrorism Center in a March 2014 report also noted the Informal Anarchist Federation\u00a0carried out a letter-bomb campaign<\/a>\u00a0against European Union officials between December 2003 and January 2004.<\/p>\n

Most of the dangerous messages were intercepted but one exploded in the hands of the European Commission\u2019s president at his home in Bologna, though he was uninjured.<\/p>\n

In Greece, Armed Proletarian Justice also conducted a failed bombing attack\u00a0against a government building in December 2023\u00a0as part of an anarchist and anti-capitalist campaign. <\/p>\n

The bomb was discovered and defused before detonation.<\/p>\n

Revolutionary Class Self Defense, also based in Greece, carried out bombings of the Greek Ministry of Labor in February 2023 and the Hellenic Railway in April 2025.<\/p>\n

Those attacks were dedicated to \u201cthe Palestinian people and their heroic resistance<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump declared Antifa a \u201cmajor\u201d terrorist organization on Sept. 17, six days after\u00a0the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk<\/a>, allegedly by an 22-year-old gunman who had been \u201cradicalized\u201d online toward a \u201cleftist ideology,\u201d according to state prosecutors.<\/p>\n

In a subsequent order<\/a>, Trump\u00a0cited\u00a0Antifa\u2019s \u201cpattern of political violence designed to suppress lawful political activity and obstruct the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n
