NEW YORK (PIX11) \u2014 Larger trash bins will be a part of the landscape citywide by 2032.<\/p>\n

The next phase of\u00a0New York City\u2019s \u201ctrash revolution\u201d<\/a>\u00a0was officially approved by city council on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

City-branded dumpsters, known as\u00a0\u2018Empire Bins,\u2019<\/a> have been in West Harlem for more than a year. They have also been placed in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.<\/p>\n

The city and councilmembers say rat reports have dropped.<\/p>\n

NYC Councilmember Shaun Abreu chairs the sanitation committee and represents the Harlem neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople notice the difference on our streets,\u201d Abreu said.<\/p>\n

By 2032, properties with over 31 units will be required to have an \u201cEmpire Bin,\u201d which holds about four cubic yards of waste.<\/p>\n

Buildings with 10-30 units can decide if they want regular trash bins or large \u201cEmpire Bins.\u201d The bins are locked, accessible by key cards given to building staff.<\/p>\n

New\u00a0trash containerization rules went into effect<\/a> last year across the city, requiring all properties with up to nine units to put trash in bins with secure lids.<\/p>\n

The 6-year phase-in is due to the size of the city. The Department of Sanitation will decide the next areas to get the bins after an environmental review.<\/p>\n

Property owners can be charged up to $55 per apartment for the empire bins.<\/p>\n
