{"id":391628,"date":"2026-11-03T03:14:07","date_gmt":"2026-11-03T03:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/391628\/"},"modified":"2026-11-03T03:14:07","modified_gmt":"2026-11-03T03:14:07","slug":"child-dies-of-measles-in-upstate-new-york-states-first-measles-death-in-30-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/391628\/","title":{"rendered":"Child dies of measles in upstate New York, state&#8217;s first measles death in 30 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A child died of measles in upstate New York, marking <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/2117405870396998123\" rel=\"nofollow\">the state\u2019s first measles-related death in 30 years<\/a>, Governor Hochul announced Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m heartbroken to learn that a child in Lewis County has died from measles,\u201d Hochul said in a statement. \u201cMy heart goes out to their family and everyone who knew and loved them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul blamed the Trump administration for policies that undermine the public\u2019s faith in the safety and efficacy of vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is New York\u2019s first measles-related death in 30 years, a devastating reminder of what\u2019s at stake when Washington deliberately erodes decades of progress in protecting Americans from preventable diseases,\u201d Hochul said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/10\/06\/pennsylvanias-measles-outbreak-is-the-largest-in-decades-in-the-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hochul declared a measles disaster<\/a> amid a sharp rise of reported cases in rural areas of the state and the largest outbreak in more than three decades in neighboring Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>The executive order extends the pool of people who can administer measles vaccines to include paramedics, midwives and others, and allows nurses to join doctors in ordering testing. The state has more than 100 cases this year.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the U.S. is experiencing its worst measles outbreak since 1991, with nearly 3,900 reported cases, according to the CDC. The number of cases this year in Pennsylvania has surpassed 1,000, state health officials said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Health officials say Pennsylvania\u2019s current outbreak started in April, west of Philadelphia.
