Voters are being asked to choose their representatives in the state Assembly and Senate; those decisions will impact what gets done in Albany next year, and in the years to come.

There are a host of judicial races on the ballot, too. Who we decide to take the seats up for grabs on the state Supreme and Civil Courts impacts the future of justice in New York and set new legal precedent that will be used to decide future cases.

And in the five boroughs, there are five different ballot questions that aim not just to change the City Charter, but also could change the very physical landscape of the Big Apple.

The questions were put forth by Mayor Mamdani’s Commission on Governmental Efficiency (COGE), a riff on the Trump Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But while DOGE seemed to focus on government finances, COGE acted as a charter revision commission, putting forth these ballot questions aimed at streamlining city regulations and cutting through red tape where it can.

Proposal 1 removes mandated hearings and Council disapproval of applications for new sidewalk cafés and planters. Proposal 2 would reduce paperwork requirements for city contractors, while Proposal 3 would simplify review of street safety projects and streamline the disposition of unused city property for other purposes.

Proposal 4 would create a centralized construction permits hub and enable Department of Buildings officials authority to approve construction projects that it currently lacks. Finally, Proposal 5 would set contribution targets for City Hall’s “Rainy Day Fund” to ensure a reserve of money that could be used to address a fiscal emergency.

We’re not going to tell you which proposals to approve or reject, but we do implore you to take time to read up on them before you head to the polls to make your decision. These ballot questions are not throwaway items to be ignored; every New Yorker is being asked to take a stand on this one way or the other, and how the majority votes on each of them will have a profound impact on the city for years to come.

One more word of advice to those who have yet to vote: When you stand in the booth today, take a moment to review the ballot and ensure you have made a vote in every contest before handing it in to be scanned.

And as you get the “I Voted” sticker today, take a moment also to appreciate the power you have as a voter in the United States of America. The power is always in your hands, and let no man or administration ever attempt to take that power from you.

If there’s one thing that can be said about voting in New York City general elections, it is…

[8
1626,11563,91068,141722,141723,17657,426,22925,9,24,141724,55,54,138981,56,66347,3476,856,51229
post-391977","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-city","tag-bruce-blakeman","tag-city-charter","tag-civil-court","tag-commission-on-governmental-efficiency","tag-downballot-races","tag-judicial-races","tag-kathy-hochul","tag-mayor-zohran-mamdani","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-new-york-city-ballot-proposals","tag-new-york-city-headlines","tag-new-york-city-news","tag-nov-3-general-election","tag-ny","tag-rainy-day-fund","tag-state-assembly","tag-state-senate","tag-state-supreme-court
["GET
