NYPD detectives believe the stabbing of a young woman who was jogging along a running path in Brooklyn was a random attack, the department\u2019s chief of detectives said Monday.<\/p>\n
An unknown attacker stabbed Katie Suarez, 28, in the neck as she was running on the path on Shore Parkway near Bay 17th Street Friday evening. She was critically injured in the attack and remains hospitalized. No arrests have been made.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs of right now, it appears it was a random attack,\u201d Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters. \u201c\u200aNobody else would’ve known that she was running there at that particular time.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the night of the attack, Suarez was doing her usual routine, Kenny said. She left work at a nearby bank at about 6:35 p.m., changed into athletic gear, met up with her mother who took her work outfit, and then set off for her run.<\/p>\n
Her father had also just left work and was planning to meet up with both of them at a nearby Wendy\u2019s restaurant and give them a ride home after Suarez finished her jog, Kenny said. At 7:56 p.m., her father called Suarez to find out when she would arrive, and she told him she was about half a mile away and would be there soon.<\/p>\n
When she didn\u2019t arrive on time, the father set off to look for her on the path. At 8:16 p.m., he found her unconscious under a tree, bleeding from the neck, Kenny said.<\/p>\n
The path where she was attacked is a stretch of running and biking track that is not covered by surveillance cameras, Kenny added. The path runs along the water from a pier in Bay Ridge to a large shopping center in Bath Beach. It\u2019s often crowded with runners, bikers and fishermen.<\/p>\n
Police are trying to recover any surveillance footage that may have been recorded by a food cart that was parked near the crime scene, Kenny said. Police are asking any drivers who may have passed through the area on the Belt Parkway around that time to contact them in case they have dashcam footage of the attacker.<\/p>\n
