Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said Sunday he met with police Commissioner Jessica Tisch<\/a> and hopes she will stay on to continue leading the NYPD when he takes office.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cI do want her to stay,\u201d Mamdani told ABC7\u2019s Bill Ritter. \u201cI made that commitment during the election and I continue to believe [that].\u201d<\/p>\n

The democratic socialist \u2013 who has scrambled to walk back past anti-law enforcement statements including \u201cdefund the police\u201d rhetoric<\/a> \u2013 has previously said he\u2019d look to retain Tisch<\/a> but the commissioner has been mum on if she\u2019d consider working in the Mamdani administration.<\/p>\n

Mamdani effusively praised the popular commissioner while taking a shot at outgoing Mayor Eric Adams and chaos within the ranks of the NYPD that Tish has been credited with stomping out.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe came into a police department where Mayor Adams had stacked the upper echelons with corruption and incompetence,\u201d Mamdani said..<\/p>\n

\u201cShe started to root that out, started to deliver accountability and reduce crime across the five boroughs. That\u2019s something I\u2019m looking to build on under a Mamdani administration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two have very different philosophies and could clash over police staffing levels, with the commissioner hoping to hire more officers and bolster the ranks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the number of officers we have is the right amount,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n

He also said he\u2019ll follow through on creating a Department of Community Safety<\/a> to respond to emergency calls involving the mentally ill and or homeless \u2013 a move he said would allow officers to focus on more serious crime.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a plan law enforcement officials have blasted as dangerous and impractical.<\/p>\n

Mamdani claimed the meeting was about driving down crime, but he dodged a question about whether he\u2019d micromanage the department with an ideology some view as radical.<\/p>\n

The meeting, he said, was \u201cmore about what it could look like to continue to deliver public safety and what it could like especially without the distractions we\u2019ve seen over the past few years.\u201d .<\/p>\n
