President Trump<\/a>\u00a0vowed to issue tariff dividends sometime before the 2026 midterms during an Oval Office event touting his administration\u2019s work bringing the FIFA World Cup to the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gonna be issuing dividends later on, somewhere prior to \u2014 the middle of next year, a little bit later than that,\u201d he said, noting it would include \u201cThousands of dollars, for individuals of moderate income.\u201d<\/p>\n

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously revealed that the\u00a0proposed $2,000 tariff dividend checks<\/a>\u00a0for American citizens would be awarded, but noted that the idea was only \u201cin discussion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bessent said that the payments \u201ccould come in lots of forms,\u201d including as \u201cjust the tax decreases that we are seeing\u201d following cuts made in the Big Beautiful Bill.<\/p>\n

The president has repeatedly said that the tariffs are\u00a0bringing in \u201ctrillions of dollars\u201d\u00a0to federal government coffers. CB<\/p>\n

Around the same time, Trump wrote on Truth Social that \u201ca dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bessent also floated a\u00a0rough income limit of $100,000<\/a>\u00a0that would disqualify higher income families from receiving the dividend.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything is on the table. That would be for working families. We will have an income limit,\u201d\u00a0Bessent assured<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump and Bessent haven\u2019t elaborated on any plans surrounding the dividends beyond the updated timeline.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As of November, the debt has surpassed $38 trillion, according to the\u00a0US Department of Treasury. REUTERS<\/p>\n

The remittance would require approval from Congress, where even the president\u2019s own Republican allies have expressed skepticism and encouraged Trump to focus on\u00a0decreasing the federal budget deficit<\/a>\u00a0instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll never pass. We have a $37 trillion debt,\u201d Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio told reporters in July, according to\u00a0Business Insider<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As of November, the debt has surpassed $38 trillion, according to the\u00a0US Department of Treasury<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump originally\u00a0announced his grand plan<\/a>\u00a0while the Supreme Court was hearing oral arguments on the legality of his sweeping tariffs against\u00a0a majority of foreign countries<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 including some the US have rarely collaborated with.<\/p>\n
