STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014More than a year after its anticipated reopening, PS 8\u2019s playground reconstruction in Great Kills has yet to be completed.<\/p>\n

The reconstruction, announced on Feb. 16, 2024, carries a $3.6 million price tag and was celebrated on Feb. 16, 2024<\/a> by elected officials, including former South Shore Councilmember Joe Borelli and former Parks Borough Commissioner Lynda Ricciardone.<\/p>\n

The general contractor for the project is Port Richmond\u2019s Perfetto Enterprises, and it is being overseen by the School Construction Authority. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to work with our partners in government as we secure the necessary approvals for the project,\u201d a School Construction Authority spokesperson told the Advance\/SILive.com. <\/p>\n

The project is slated to include play equipment, pavement, fences, gates, drains, and a handrail path between the school and the playground. <\/p>\n

The Advance\/SILive.com reached out to the School Construction Authority about a new anticipated completion date, the amount of work completed and the exact permits needed, but the agency had not responded by the time of publication.<\/p>\n

The playground \u201cis an important place for recreation for both students at PS 8 and other local children. These continued enhancements to our playgrounds and greenspaces provide safe spaces for children to play after school and help bring communities closer together,\u201d Ricciardone said at the groundbreaking ceremony.<\/a> <\/p>\n

Borelli, at the time, said: \u201cThis park functions as a major hub for the children of P.S. 8 and the many families living nearby. Once completed this fall, the park will be safer and have improved play equipment for everyone utilizing it daily. I am proud to be able to fund this project and see it finally coming to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n
