They\u2019re heavily traveled, and some are centuries old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A special project is wrapping up along some historic roadways in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:More Local News;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> More Local News <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Many of the roads in the DUMBO neighborhood are landmarked. Some call them cobblestones. They\u2019re also classified as Belgian Bricks or blocks, based on the way they fit together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The NYC Department of Design and Construction, along with the Department of Transportation, is wrapping up a six-year $108 million project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">26 blocks around the area were restored, including major sewer and drain improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some new areas have created accessible intersections and a smooth bike lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some neighbors said the stones add to the area, and they\u2019re glad construction is wrapping up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A total of about 800,000 blocks have been reset, and infrastructure work has upgraded some drains, water, and sewer lines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/pix11-preferred-source-google-184248152.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Make PIX11 your preferred news source on Google: Here\u2019s how;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Make PIX11 your preferred news source on Google: Here\u2019s how <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Alexandria Sica is the President of the DUMBO Improvement District. She says it modernizes and keeps the historic charm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s totally functional. You walked around, it would be a trip hazard,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The city says almost all of the original blocks were restored and reused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The streets date back nearly three centuries, when the area was a maritime and shipping center.
