STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that one high-profile position will remain filled by its current occupant. <\/p>\n
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch will continue her work under Mamdani, despite being originally selected by outgoing Mayor Eric Adams. <\/p>\n
Tisch took up the post in November 2024 as the 48th commissioner of the NYPD. <\/p>\n
\u201cI look forward to working with Commissioner Jessica Tisch to deliver genuine public safety in New York City. I have admired her work cracking down on corruption in the upper echelons of the police department, driving down crime in New York City, and standing up for New Yorkers in the face of authoritarianism,\u201d Mamdani said in a written statement. \u201cTogether, we will deliver a city where rank-and-file police officers and the communities they serve alike are safe, represented, and proud to call New York their home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fewest shooting incidents and shooting victims in recorded history over the first ten months of the year.Murders down nearly 20% citywide year-to-date.More than 4,800 illegal guns removed from the city\u2019s streets in 2025.Reductions in six of the seven major crime categories.Citywide index crime down across patrol precincts, NYCHA developments, and the subway system.The four safest months in transit in 15 years \u2013 with July, August, September, and October marking record safety underground outside the pandemic years.<\/p>\n
She served in different city agencies outside of the NYPD over her 18-year-long career, including the Department of Sanitation and the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications where she served in top positions. <\/p>\n
The NYPD is where her career began, according to the statement, when she entered the city workforce in the department\u2019s counterterrorism bureau in 2008. <\/p>\n
\u201cThanks to the men and women of the NYPD, the strategies we deployed this year have delivered historic reductions in crime,\u201d Tisch said. \u201cI\u2019ve spoken to Mayor-elect Mamdani several times, and I\u2019m ready to serve with honor as his Police Commissioner. That\u2019s because he and I share many of the same public safety goals for New York City: lowering crime, making communities safer, rooting out corruption, and giving our officers the tools, support, and resources they need to carry out their noble work.\u201d<\/p>\n
