It happens outside, but it comes back inside to the homes as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The 125th Street Business Improvement District hosted the Harlem Holiday Lights Parade.<\/p>\n<p>Mukaram Taheraly, the chairman of the 12th Street Business Improvement District, said, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter who you are, welcome to Harlem and just light it up with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme, \u201cCulture, Community and Connections,\u201d was highlighted throughout the parade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have community engagement, we have toy drives, we have seniors coming out, we have youth coming out. We have bands on the streets, and there\u2019s activation on the whole strip. It\u2019s incredible!\u201d Taheraly said.<\/p>\n<p>Senior citizens had their own watch site on 135th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard called \u201cSeniors on the Boulevard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the parade passed, they got a special surprise \u2014 a new tablet and free data service for a year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristmas has arrived!\u201d Veronica Nessmith-Brown exclaimed as she received her present. \u201cThis is beautiful. Thank God for the seniors. This is something that we really, really need. Especially the seniors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen Dixon, executive director of the Harlem Fowling West Side Center, helped organize \u201cSeniors on the Boulevard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt keeps them connected,\u201d she said. \u201cMany seniors are isolated, even those that may go to a center when they go home. They may not have anyone at home, and technology such as a tablet gives them an opportunity to explore other avenues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of this year\u2019s grand marshals was actor and philanthropist Malik Yoba.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a kid who ran up and down these streets, to be here in Harlem knowing that we actually have a holiday parade, which is not something we had when I was a kid. This is major.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Apollo Theater was the only institution to be named a grand marshal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s extraordinary, because we have been in this community since 1934 as a cultural icon,\u201d Billy Mitchell said. \u201cToday\u2019s parade is just the highlight of what we do here in Harlem, highlighting our icons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlem Holiday Lights has taken place for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>There were more than 20 lit-up floats this year that travelled throughout the neighborhood.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The holiday season kicked off in Harlem Tuesday with the Harlem Holiday Lights Parade.
