White House border czar Tom Homan said Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations will ramp<\/a> up shortly in New York City.<\/p>\n

In an interview on Fox News\u2019s \u201cAmerica\u2019s Newsroom,\u201d the Trump administration\u2019s senior immigration official noted he previously had an agreement with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to let ICE operate from Rikers Island, but the City Council sued to block the proposal and the state Supreme Court sided with the council<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI plan on being in New York City in the near future. We\u2019re going to do operations in New York City. We know, in New York City, me and Mayor Adams at one point had an agreement to let ICE into Rikers Island \u2026 but the city council shut it down,\u201d Homan said.<\/p>\n

Homan said there\u2019s already a significant law enforcement presence<\/a> in the city, but residents can expect that to increase.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we\u2019re going to be coming to New York City,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019re already there now. I mean, teams are there now, but we are increasing enforcement present in New York City \u2014 again, because they\u2019re a sanctuary city, and we know we have an issue there with public safety threats in the street every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homan said ICE operations are not focused specifically on the partisan leaning of the city but added that the government is targeting sanctuary cities because, he said, that\u2019s where the government perceives there to be the biggest threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegardless of, Republican or Democratic city, we\u2019re going to enforce the laws across this country and take those public safety threats off the street,\u201d Homan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ll say this,\u201d he continued. \u201cI\u2019ve said it from day one: Sanctuary cities, we\u2019re flooding the zone because we know they\u2019re releasing public safety threats in the communities every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where the biggest problem is, and that\u2019s where we\u2019re sending majority of the agents,\u201d Homan added.<\/p>\n

In a statement from Adams\u2019s office, a spokesperson stressed the importance of maintaining public safety, adding, \u201cthat\u2019s exactly what Mayor Adams has worked to do every day for nearly four years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the Adams administration has said over and over, we are willing to work with federal authorities on criminal issues like stopping the flow of illegal guns,\u201d the statement read, pointing to public safety achievements during Adams\u2019s term.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we have also been clear that our administration will always follow the law, and that means we do not collaborate with the federal government on civil immigration enforcement,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n
