Premiering Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. on Crave<\/a>, the 10-episode series follows queens from across Canada as they compete for the coveted title of Canada\u2019s Next Drag Superstar.<\/p>\nThe experience, one of the local drag artists says, was \u201clife-changing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cGoing into this process and being able to focus 100 per cent on myself and my\u00a0drag\u00a0was really something so beautiful,\u201d says PM, 31, of the show. \u201cIt was challenging, obviously, and the days were long, obviously \u2014\u00a0but I feel like it was all worth it!\u201d<\/p>\n
PM is joined by Hazel, age 27, as they compete against 10 other performers for the top title.<\/p>\n
Noting the experience on the show was \u201cabsolutely wild,\u201d Hazel added that the competition pushes competitors to their limits through a series of stressful, timed challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cChallenges that would normally take days or weeks to perfect, you suddenly have to deliver in a matter of hours with a clock ticking down,\u201d she says. \u201cThat pressure forces you to dig deep, trust your instincts and tap into parts of your creativity you didn\u2019t even know were there.\u201d<\/p>\n
The local drag stars agreed that, in addition to the possibility of winning the competition title, they\u2019re both excited to shine a spotlight on the city\u2019s growing drag scene through the show.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur city has some of the strongest drag talent in the entire country \u2014 queens, kings and everything in between,\u201d says Hazel, who is also a competitive diver who competed for the Canadian team. \u201cWe\u2019re diverse, creative and constantly pushing the artistry forward, and it\u2019s an honour to be the one carrying that legacy onto the show.<\/p>\n
\u201cVancouver\u2019s scene has shaped me, challenged me and motivated me to grow, and I\u2019m proud to step onto that runway as a direct product of this community.\u201d<\/p>\n
This season of Canada\u2019s Drag Race features a panel of three Canadian judges: Brooke Lynn Hytes, Brad Goreski and Traci Melchor. A special celebrity guest judge also shows up each episode.<\/p>\n
Noting a desire to showcase and represent Vancouver\u2019s \u201crich and beautiful alternative drag scene,\u201d PM added there\u2019s an eagerness to also highlight to viewers that drag is an art form that goes far beyond just entertainment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is so much more to drag than just being a female impersonator,\u201d they said. \u201cAnd I am so excited that I get to carry the torch and represent all the weirdos.\u201d<\/p>\n
