{"id":46767,"date":"2025-11-21T00:26:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T00:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/46767\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T00:26:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T00:26:08","slug":"mayor-eric-adams-administration-comes-out-swinging-against-devastating-airbnb-bill-serious-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/46767\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 administration comes out swinging against \u2018devastating\u2019 Airbnb bill: \u2018Serious concerns\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 administration came out swinging Thursday against Airbnb\u2019s multi-million dollar effort to dilute the city\u2019s strict <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/19\/us-news\/nyers-reveal-how-they-feel-about-airbnb-in-new-poll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">short-term rental laws <\/a>\u2014 warning it\u2019ll lead to inflated rents and exacerbate the housing supply crisis.<\/p>\n<p>A City Council committee heard testimony from the Mayor\u2019s Office of Special Engagement, along with nearly 90 members of the public, over <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/12\/us-news\/inside-airbnb-stealth-campaign-to-dilute-nycs-new-rental-laws-with-hidden-funding-of-grassroots-groups\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the package of bills<\/a>, Intros 948-A and 1107-A.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed laws would change restrictions on short-term rentals, allowing one and two-family homeowners to let out their units without being present for up to 30 days \u2014 which the OSE argued would threaten long-term leases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill allows for the potential loss of this entire group of homes to the short-term rental market, which would be devastating,\u201d warned Christian Klossner, Executive Director of the OSE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it may seem like an insignificant change, it is not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City council held a hearing Thursday for two bills that would expand Airbnb\u2019s access to the Big Apple.  REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Even Bronx Councilwoman Piernina Ana Sanchez, the committee chair, said she had \u201cserious concerns\u201d about the proposals, which sources said were pushed to a hearing by Speaker Adrienne Adams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enter this hearing with serious concerns myself,\u201d Sanchez, a Democrat repping the 14th District, said, noting that 28% of the city\u2019s current housing stock falls under the bill\u2019s purview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShort-term rental policy is one of the most contentious issues before this body,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A slew of unions, including 32BJ SEIU and the Hotel &amp; Gaming Trades Council, came out in droves to oppose the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>But Council Members Mercedes Narcisse (Brooklyn-46th District), Kevin Riley (Bronx-12th District), and Farah Louis (Brooklyn-45th District), a bill sponsor, led the charge in support \u2014 arguing that current restrictions prevent homeowners from earning necessary extra cash.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to carve this little space for the people who need to breathe \u2013 what do I say to those folks,\u201d said bill sponsor Mercedes Narcisse. \u00a0 JUSTIN LANE\/EPA-EFE \/ Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to carve this little space for the people who need to breathe \u2013 what do I say to those folks?\u201d Narcisse argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no recipe for those people losing their home, they\u2019re losing their homes over $5,000.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year, Airbnb has spent $10 million dollars funding a super PAC called \u201cAffordable New York\u201d to push the bills, that target Local Law 18, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/16\/business\/nyc-airbnb-hosts-on-brink-of-foreclosure-following-city-clampdown-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which the council passed in 2023<\/a> imposing strict regulations on home-sharing, serving a blow to the online rental company. <\/p>\n<p>The PAC has spent over $2.5 million funding campaigns for pro-Airbnb New York politicos, including Narcisse, Riley and Louis, who all successfully ran for re-election this year in their respective districts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Airbnb argued the bill would not affect the city\u2019s housing supply.
